What law are you practicing?

I get steady income from appointed contracts. I call it overhead money. It pays the bills of the office.

I make money from what walks in the door. Generally, the more money per case means it takes longer to collect. I get paid on these for the work I did the year before. Makes my first year tight, but I can see the light at the end of the tunnel.

When I was a government employee I made a living. Steady but with a definite ceiling. Working for myself, nothing is guaranteed (outside of contract work). However, if I kill it an bring it home it's mine and there is no bag limit.

Interesting discussion. My wife worked for a big firm in Manhattan and regularly billed >2200 per year... And she was an honest biller. The money was amazing, but the lifestyle wasn't. She doesn't practice anymore.

I make good money now, but still don't have the salary she did 10 years ago!

They are available through the county and you are approved by Judges. In my case, I have a contract doing indigent defense for juvenile delinquency cases. Other contracts are for various other practice areas such as guardian ad litem, juvenile dependant. These cases are also appointed or if contract for a set hourly rate set by the state.

I also do appointed criminal cases for indigent cases. People see you in court and retain you based off seeing you. I lower my usual flat rate for these cases since I'm already in the courtroom.

The biggest adjustment for me has not been the law, but the business side of lawyering. Running the business, keeping the books etc.

ETA

Not sure why you are being down voted for asking.

So you're the reason we have shitty roads all throughout this state. You're the guy that's making a killing off of these shitty contracts and construction of roads. Thanks for fleecing us. Enjoy your money.

I don't build roads......I'm an electrical contractor.

Thanks, anyway.....
