Just think of what the media would do if they got a hold of engineering terms: "stud", "nut", "total dynamic head", "suction head", "shaft", "orifice", etc., etc.

I think that would be a win tbh

This summer we had a "Red Flag Warning" which caused all the emotional types to wring their hands. "OMG we have never gad one before!"

Probably because they made it up 3-4 years ago.

"Bomb cyclone" is taken (by the media) from the meteorological term "bombogenesis."

Unfortunately, the media loves to say "BOMB CYCLONE" because it catches attention and garners clicks/views.

. It’s basically a blizzard (heavy snow and high winds blowing snow) with even higher and more sustained winds

Isn't there a difference between a snow storm and a blizzard? Isn't a blizzard considered a severe snow storm? So why the need for "Bomb cyclone"? Sounds like embellishment for ratings, and a nice little talking point for politicians to justify raising taxes.

Bomb Cyclone = plummeting atmospheric pressure...hence why it drops so quickly...like a bomb

Blizzards are high sustained winds that blow already-present snow around...it's also a made up word coming from blow, blast, blister, bluster, etc.

A snow storm is not considered a blizzard until it reaches ~40mph sustained winds.

So they're all different.

Don't you just KNOW that the Weather Channel is all kinds of pissed because the National Weather Service didn't go along with the idea of naming winter storms?

Blizzard has to do with the wind. Snow with wind over 35 sustained for at least three hours. They create white out conditions and thus are especially dangerous.

So why the need for "Bomb cyclone"?

A "bomb" just refers to the rate of pressure drop, and depends on latitude (takes more of a drop at higher latitudes to qualify). It doesn't have to bring a huge snowstorm, but often does since a big part of the strengthening is related to a big temperature gradient across the system. So the cold side is often cold enough to support a lot of snow. There's also a lot of wind with them.

The "bomb cyclone" is just a way to message it's a very powerful system vs more common winter storms.

“Bombing out” is a rapid deepening of a low pressure area. The term is also commonly used with tropical systems that undergo rapid intensification. In a winter storm it can result in a lot of travelers getting caught off-guard and in a very dangerous blizzard condition.

High winds that blow existing snow around is a ground blizzard. A true blizzard requires high sustained winds over a long period of time and snow falling. Without the wind it is just called a winter storm.

We drove through the southern edge of a blizzard on our way to CO on a ski trip last year. Visibility was about 2 feet. It was scary as shite.

This is true. It refers to a low pressure system whose pressure has fallen at least 24 mb in a 24 hour period. Meteorologists have called these types of rapidly deepening systems “bombs” for decades.
