Visited Austin for the first time just a few weeks ago when WVU played UT. Our hotel was close to 6th St right by one or two big homeless shelters. Made for interesting walks back to our hotel Friday and Saturday nights. Terry Blacks BBQ was great. Scooters everywhere kind of seemed like a disaster waiting to happen. Walked around campus and got asked to vote and got a dirty look when we told them we didn't live there. Overall a fun weekend though. Would go back.

Austin is a cool city. These threads are a good litmus test to separate normal people from those who somehow manage to let an electoral map impede their enjoyment of an otherwise cool city. If you are normal then you can enjoy lots of cities in the US of all different political affiliations. Note: this does require social skills so is NA for most of the OT.

I've been to 47 states and visited Austin for the first time about 6 years ago. It's not feasible to travel to every big city in the country for most.

Those arent homeless people. Its milennials. They dress nasty like that in lib prog areas.
This, the guys look like typical homeless, the chicks either adopt a kind of 60s "Annie Hall " look, or the militant lesbian look with close cropped green or purple hair, something that looks like a sack for a dress and combat boots.

I’ll be going for the first time in a few weeks. You’re right. I highly doubt people born and raised in New York or Arizona have been to Austin at the same rate as someone born in Texas.

Corporate sponsored “weirdness” is the new Austin.

Austin ain’t what it used to be.
Was there several weeks ago and nothing but Beto signs all over town.
As opposed to Kinky Friedman signs?

That's spot on.

One of the worst places in the country. My blood begins to boil as soon as I enter city limits, even when I'm still on the interstate.
Where do you live? I can see how some would say that Austin is overrated based on a lot of the hype it's received. Anything short of being greeted with a blowjob upon arrival would be a disappointment. But one of the worst places in the country and a visceral reaction? Seems a tad dramatic, don't you think? Seriously would like to know where you live that gives you this perspective. I

best thing about Austin is leaving the city. Hippie capital.

Tons of homeless, terrible traffic, very expensive, and a bunch of weirdos/freaks.
Very overrated city.

Homeless everywhere now. Especially the southwest.
Many of them illegals.
Even if not, we have our own problems with poverty in this country and should not be spending US money to solve other countries problems.

That’s exactly what I asked too! These miserable pricks hate when people get on here and talk about how awesome places outside of La are. They seriously believe where they live is just fine. Whatever floats your boat I guess. I guess some people are just content with inferior quality of life.

That’s literally describing Nola. Except all the homeless people aren’t white there.

Don't you live in Lafayette?

Austin used to be cool and unique. Now everything is commercial and generic.
This is true. Downtown is very cookie cutter. They use to have some cool hangout spots in Rainey Street but that neighborhood is disappearing as generic condo towers are being constructed.

I'm always amazed at the number of grown men who are so bothered by hippies and hipsters. Give me my fat redneck shithole any day of the week!

Rainey Street is still alive and kicking, although I'm not a fan of the condos. Some of the coolest new hangout spots and restaurants are now on the east side.
