I'm telling you (no pun intended) - if you give these activist enough rope, they will hang themselves. And it's already started.

As each day passes, they are getting more and more ridiculous. Their little movement has already started to lose it's effectiveness. If they continue to come up with insane bullshite like this, their message will absolutely 100% begin to fall on more and more deaf ears. Very similar to the over use of the word racist, which has now become meaningless to many.

Being "woke" can work both ways.

I actually support giving them what they want.

Want to tear down the interstate? Fine, here's some ANFO and some heavy equipment. Let's see how it turns out.

Now, as the nation reckons with other racist aspects of its past — with protests, in several prominent instances, on ’60s-era freeways much like the Claiborne — Shelly and other advocates around the country are intensifying their calls for city and state governments to remove the highways that destroyed Black neighborhoods.

And we didn't tear down railroads that turned mining towns into ghost towns, we just expected people in those communities to adapt to market trends and find new homes

This idea that you should never have to move and your life should just be picture perfect and given to you on a silver platter is just bizarre to me. If you want to optimize your path in life, it oftentimes involves finding a way to move towards better opportunities.

And this isn't just a race thing. This dialog also comes up when discussing manufacturing jobs in the Midwest.

Sounds like they want gentrification.

Except I thought gentrification was racist and bad?

It's funny, I believe to a certain extent they have a point on the interstates. Many times it does cause urban trash to build up around it due to terrible planning by cities in the form of restrictions on business that are permitted by the king's to build there or through terrible tax policies.

But I thought, ok, I understand the argument, so I kept reading, thinking this could rebuild neighborhoods through gentrification.

The fricking idiots later in the article then talk about how they are against gentrification. Well wtf? You oppose so called highway segregation, but then you call for the city to enforce segregation after tearing it down? Where the frick are people suppose to live if you remove the highway forcing people to move back to the city?

Their argument makes no sense. They call for the "racist" highway to be torn down because it ruined that neighborhood (newsflash it was already ruined), but then in the same fricking article call for the city to implement racist policies to stop gentrification and allow segregation.

IN WHAT WORLD DOES THIS MAKE SENSE??!!!

This has been talked about for years.

It's weird how other countries can handle it just fine.

Not sure why you didn't quote the parts where she made her best points rather than just highlighting those you thought would be considered "hot takes" on the OT.

I don't think what she wants will happen but if cities around the country are going to be redoing highways, her and her ilk's voices should be heard. There's no question many black neighborhoods were shat upon when highway planning was done and if there are reasonable alternatives that would restore these neighborhoods, then they should be explored.

No one is demanding highways be destroyed or removed. The article is a good read.

Regardless of the the political motivation, I agreed with the plan for removing the Claiborne overpass. The plan removed the overpass, reconfigured Claiborne as a surface boulevard, built a cloverleaf at I-10/610, and increased capacity on the expressway.

Would that plan get executed properly... not a chance.

Yes the Big Dig in Boston was a financial hole, but the positive impact of the city is undeniable.

You might want to read the article again. I am in agreement with you, but the article goes into details about gentrification. The same ones that are calling for the highway to be demolished so that the area can be developed also call for protections from gentrification.

Can't have it both ways. Either you are against the so called racist highway and racism in the form of segregation or you aren't. Either you want the segregation that the highway caused, to end or you are for segregation.

You don't get to say....I don't want white people to be able to live in the suburbs and not pass through my neighborhood, but in the same breath say whites are not welcomed to live or build businesses in your neighborhood.

Segregation is segregation, period.

People will eventually embrace racism. You get called something enough, may as well become it.
