Part of their drive is to make it impossible to live in the suburbs or rural areas and commute to work.
If you have to live in the city, that money is captured in various ways.

Sounds like they want gentrification.
Except I thought gentrification was racist and bad?

It's a hell of a lot simpler than that. They just want to destroy shite in order to show they have the power to destroy it. Of course, they'll be the first ones to claim racism caused said destruction as well.

Which is why they want to destroy capitalism as well. Can't be gentrification if everyone is equally poor and crammed in to shitty apartments.

A couple of years ago, when Mitch was mayor, the city did a study that tearing down the interstate above Claiborne from the Superdome to St. Bernard Ave. would only ad 6-8 minutes in extra travel time.
Don't know how they came up with the figure, because it's insane.

Y’all are late on this.
Removing or the want to remove inner city highways has been going on for awhile now.

Well ya, it's been an urban planning wet dream for years. Forces everyone on to mass transit.
First time I've seen them justify it because of racism though.

INterested to see how all this affects the I-45 North project through downtown Houston. The social advocates were already banging the drum before George Floyd.......even though TxDOT went through 15+ years of NEPA engagements, bending over backwards for the social justice needs.

Activists in BR said 110 was built to bypass black neighborhoods even though it began it's first iterations in the 50's when NBR was still an overwhelmingly white area.

jokes on them
Teleworking is becoming more popular. This just ensures that cities die all the faster. Enjoy the poverty and sadness.

By the end of the year, she hopes to complete new renderings that imagine what the neighborhood could look like if the I-10 came down: a restored, lively, mixed-use boulevard, much like the Claiborne Avenue of her childhood.
Black Lanes Matter.

You're giving them far too much credit here. They haven't thought that far ahead.
