7th grade and could not swim??? Weird.

Most people who drown do so because they panic, including people who can swim.

*not saying this is the case here

From what I have read, the boy was in a canoe. I suspect the canoe overturned, and he could not free himself from it initially, and panic set in.

Did they find the canoe? Shouldn't be too hard.

I agree, however, the canoe is probably the least of their concerns right now. The boy's body is probably at the bottom of the pond for the time being.

Well yeah because if you cant swim you dont jump in water

Well yeah, you jumped right into my point. Peej was surprised a 7th grader couldn't swim, my point was a 13/14 yo who went out in the water by themselves could probably swim. Though like everything in life being able to swim is a wide pool, someone can be a competitive swimmer or they may be barely capable.

The possibility of a canoe might complicate that.

The bottoms of these ponds are very soft with thick deep mud. If the water was at a certain height, he could have easily gotten stuck in the mud below the surface of the water.

There are multiple ponds in Keystone. I can't tell which one by the picture.

When the military first started wearing helmets, the number of head injuries drastically increased.

I’m white. I learned to swim in college when I took a swim class to fulfill required credits.

Unfortunately, a terrible outcome, and one that was known. I hope the family can find closure and eventually happiness again once they go through the five stages of grief.

This whole scenario unfolded just across the street from my house. The pond is on the north side of Harborstone Avenue. Please take with a grain of salt, but I heard there were multiple boys (not sure if 2 or 3) in kayak or small boat. One of them a young black male, around 12 years old. The boat/kayak flipped. The other young man was able to swim to shore. At around 5:30pm yesterday first responders started showing up, some with kayaks. I believe initially they entered the water with kayaks to try to pin point the canoe or kayak and young man without real means of making a rescue at first. One responder had a 12 ft push pole with him. I heard him yell he was barely touching the bottom with it with his arm extended down under the water. He believed the water was around 13-14 ft. Divers were able to recover the body at about 12:30am this morning. Very sad. Many prayers for the family!

They actually pulled the canoe/kayak out pretty shortly after responders arrived. I’m not sure why but it almost seemed a priority early on. Took a lot of effort and time for the responder to paddle his kayak with the sunken one in tow to the shore. I thought it was a little weird that any effort was put into that early on, but possibly a key piece of understanding what took place I guess.
