To calculate percentage, you need to know the whole population value. If you are talking about in the population., then you would divide the number of people who died in the category by the specific population, then multiply by 100.
With the numbers you gave, you could more easily define the ratio of gun deaths relative to cancer deaths. 1,620/96 = 16.9. In other words, "Each day in the region population, there are 16.9 cancer related deaths for every death related to gun violence."

96 gun deaths, fyi.

I hate math, its usually one ear and out the other. While I can figure out percentages while I'm in store, figuring out sales prices (in my head). I'm not sure how to compare two numbers and get the percentages.

Well I get that, I already frustrated and confused as it was. I should have put more information, but to me I figured that if I had two numbers I could figure out what the answer was by that.
So, I might be going the wrong way about it. The information that I gathered is 2,996 people died in 9/11 (in one day). 1,620 people die of cancer, 96 people die from gun violence, 175 people per day from overdoses, and 10 people from accidental drownings (per day). I thought I could do percentages to figure out each number from the people who died from 9/11.
If there is a better way of trying to express each set of numbers, so be it.

So you are comparing deaths in 9/11 (2996) to certain death populations. Correct?

Ah, it's all clear now. The answer is 288.

Are you trying to use these other causes of death to show how big the number of deaths in 9/11 is by comparison?
In other words, are you trying to say 2996 people died in 9/11, which is 85% more than the amount of people who die from cancer every day. (85% = (2996-1620) divided by 1620)
If so, you'd take the amount of 9/11 deaths minus the deaths from whatever cause, then divide that result by the deaths from whatever cause. That will give you the percentage MORE deaths in 9/11.

Lmao or 1600/100 for cancer to guns.
That's not how percentages work at all
Posted on 4/11/18 at 1:36 pm to Tiger2287
The answer is (1620-96)/96, which is 1587.5%.

Ding Ding Ding. I should have worded it better. I was really feeling stupid there. Which I still do, but at least I got my answer. BTW, no I googled it, I couldn't get a clear answer, and I was posting on here already, so I decided to ask.

There are a lot of smart folks on here. In just about every thread there is solid advice and shite. I would do the percentages for you but I’m not sure you would understand.

Feel free to do the math yourself, but based on the numbers you gave, the 2,996 people who died in 9/11 is 85% more than the amount of people who die from cancer in the US every day. It's 3021% more than the amount people who die from gun deaths every day, 1612% more than the amount of people who die from overdoses everyday, and 29860% more than the amount of people who die from accidental drowning per day.
It's also 34% more than the amount of people who die daily from cancer, gun violence, overdoses, and accidental drowning combined. (2996-(1620+96+175+10)) divided by (1620+96+175+10) = 34%
