I think it should be less. If you had the same amount of people die from cancer as guns, it wouldn't be 96/96 = 100% more. It's only a % increase on the deaths greater than gun deaths.

I think what he was asking was how many percent more people die from cancer than gun violence.

I believe it's (1620-96)/96 x 100 = 1587.5% more people die from cancer than guns

Good catch. I said "more" in my original reply, but that was incorrect. You're answer is how many more - I simply gave him the ratio.

Say 1,620 people die a day from cancer, and 96 people a day die from gun violence, what is the percentage of people who die from cancer than guns per day.

this makes no sense as written, but I believe you mean a percentage showing how many more people die of cancer than guns per day.

so 1620 cancer deaths / 96 gun deaths = 16.875 cancer deaths for every one gun death or 1687.5%

You're in college and don't know how to do percentages? I weep for this country.

Are you including only these 2 causes of death or are you talking about the percentage of each of these 2 in relation to all deaths in one day?

This is the ratio. The percentage "more" would be 1587.5%.

Since it's being used in a paper, saying approximately 17 people die of cancer every day for every gun death would be the most useful.

The OP needs to divide the daily deaths by 96 to figure how many people die from X for every one gun death each day.

Don't worry about it, I really needed help, and between the bullshite I couldn't figure out who was giving me a truthful answer. I would rather be bad at math and English than have a low moral compass, so that's ok. Sorry after 13 years of being a stay at home mom I lost some of my education along the way. Sorry for going back and getting one. frick you guys.

People have tried to give you serious answers but we need a better idea of what you're trying to say.

Like what population is he comparing.

Is it just deaths, or life vs death via x?

You're really going to have to develop a thicker skin if you're going to post on the OT. This is mostly fun and games and a whole lot of fricking around. Oh, and all women are whores. So we got that going for us.

When I want to get a percentage of something that isn't "obvious" (like if there are 10 people and 5 of them are female, what percentage is male?) I just break it down, if I explain it it would sound more complicated than it is, but it is how I do it in my head, but I always end up looking at it in the simplest form. 10 is 100%, you take two away, that's 20% so you now have 80%. It's more to it than that, but I just have it in my head a certain way..

If I had to bet, the OP wants to say how many people die from X for every person who dies from Y on a daily basis. I'd imagine gun deaths should be the constant, so the OP should divide the daily death amount of cancer, car accidents, etc. each by 96.

A few logical leaps are required without more information.
