There are a lot of smart folks on here.
There really are, up to and including honest to God rocket scientists. But as NoHo said, you have to have a thick skin and wade through some jackassery. If you can do that, you'll have some fun and learn something once in a while.
And I've seen this place really come through for people in a crisis in a way that I can only call inspiring. A shitposter also can be, and usually is, a caring individual.

If there is a better way of trying to express each set of numbers, so be it.
There are lots of ways to express the numbers. That's why we are asking more questions to find out what you are looking for. You just gave a lot more info and still no real direction of what you are trying to do.

With the numbers you gave, you could more easily define the ratio of gun deaths relative to cancer deaths. 1,620/92 = 17.6. In other words, "Each day in the U.S., there are 17.6 cancer related deaths for every death related to gun violence."
quote:
96 gun deaths, fyi.
OK...then it's (16.9 : 1).
ETA...I had it right the first time...there are 33,636 gun related deaths in the US per year...divide by 365 and you have 92.15. So, subconsciously I must have known the right number to use. So I should stand by my 17.6:1 ratio.

This has probably already been suggested in 5 pages, but percentages are not best way to describe what you are trying to describe, i.e., numbers with vastly different magnitudes. Write something like "16 times as many cancer deaths than gun deaths"

1687.5% more people die from cancer per day than from gun deaths.
Which is exactly why % is the wrong way to look at this.
No one cares about percentages over a few hundred.

did you know that 60% of statistics are made up on the spot 30% of the time.
