Ahh I see the resident idiot showed up to this thread to show exactly how ignorant someone could be of a product.
One of the dumbest things I have ever read about a kamado.
Then of course the 2 zone cooking bit.. If you have a Primo of or a Kamado Joe you have a great 2 zone method.
The whole point is that it's versatile. My 2 Kamados replaced a Webber smoky mountain, a Webber genesis and a kettle. The only reason I have two is that I take the small one tailgating.

No discussion about a kamado grill would be complete without someone who can't afford one showing up to tell everyone how their Weber Kettle can do everything just as well and some things better.
The hypocrisy of the OT knows no bounds. If this were a Yeti thread y'all would all be talking about how your cheap Colemans can do the same.
I'm not a Weber fan, but Eggs and Kamados are so money grubbing about this accessory and that accessory it makes Yeti look like Mother Theresa.

Thank you. I may hit NOLA on 6/2.
Appreciate it.

Where have I ever said yetis and igloos are same?
I haven't. In fact, I said I have a lot of yeti stuff because my wife works for a dealer. I may have also said that the main benefit to a yeti is that my fatass friends can sit on them without collapsing the lid.

The only accessory I have ever purchased was a grill plate and a pitmaster iq130 which was a gift (awesome one).
Everything needed to smoke, grill, bake, at mutiple levels and temp were included in initial purchase.
People think they are expensive but compare to people that purchase a char grill gas grill every 3 years for 300 and replace after it rusts out, its a steal.
Don't drop a kamado and your grandkids can use it. Buy the expensive Blaze one and shite you could probably nuke the damn thing.

BGE is the worst at all the accessory stuff. I bought the grill plates for my Primo and built a custom made table that's about the size of a freaking bedroom(7x3.5). My old fire pit poker works perfect for taking a hot grill off. The only other thing I need is the rib rack holder & that's not really pressing

Any brand Japanese style Kamado cooks excellent food. The get hot fast for grilling. They hit extreme heat 800+ degrees. You can slow smoke for 18+ hours on 1 batch of lump charcoal. Lump gets very hot and burns very slow with a good flavor.
Weber kettles are awesome, but I once burned a hole in one cooking with lump.
Any cooker can make great food but ceramic Kamado are excellent cookers that are fun to cook on. I bought mine on the suggestion from a James Beard award winning chef. It's a great investment IF you like to cook.

Now we are getting to why you made this thread. Go ahead and tell us about your expensive grill.
Personally, I just have the help clean out my Big Green Egg after each use.

I do a lot of dinner parties for 15 to 20 people. I looked at the Kamado/Egg type grills very closely. I have owned custom made grills for years, and know the square inch capacity that I need to cook the meals I need to produce for these dinner parties. I also like to use the dual zone cooking method which works better on a traditional grill.
I ended up spending about the same amount on a custom grill as I would for a Kamado, but got much more grill space. It has a lifetime guarantee on the firebox and frame, I didn't have to buy a cradle, or heat diffuser, or other expensive accessories, and I don't have to worry about cracking it. It wheels around effortlessly, and holds heat from 725 degrees (recorded with a IR thermometer)which I won't hardly ever use, down to a wonderful 250 degrees that it will hold for hours on end with lump charcoal. It also has a great feature of an adjustable fire grate.
All in all, a grill that meets my needs that a Kamado/ Egg can't, or won't, due to size for the same price. .

You had a custom built grill made for 900 dollars?
I would consider a traeger style pellet grill as well for people that need a lot of space.

Truth is, you are a homo if you don't own an egg. Green life, baby.

Shop vac it all day.
I owned a large gas/char/smoke/burner combo grill that was flooded out.
I went with a BGE this time around and I have used it more than I ever did the other grill. It's very simple to use and has a unique flavor that I enjoy.

quote:this guy knows whats up. $1200 for a grill is insanity. you people act like it was impossible to grill before the big green egg hit the market. i can get a consistent temp on a weber kettle that will hold for hours. also comes with a removable ash basin so you don't have to spend $25 on a special ash removal shovel from BGE.
I promise you can get equal results from a Weber kettle and a Slow N Sear.

I have owned and used Webber kettles, gas grills and smokers for 15 years before getting a Kamado. You are full of shite if you think the heat retention is remotely simular.
You will never get 18 hours at 225 untouched on any kettle. Hell you won't get 8 hours.

I agree these are "overpriced". I happen to have been researching these all weekend, so I have followed this thread. I just can't see how people don't think they add some value. It may not be worth 1200 to you (although you can find them around 700 if you don't go with BGE), but it certainly does things "better" than a typical grill. I don't know many grills where you can basically just fill it up with charcoal and just do what you want. Close the vents and smoke at 225. After you are done smoking, open those vents up and get it up to 600+ and grill a steak. Close everything up and put out the fire saving the remaining charcoal. Light it up the next day using the same charcoal that's left over and do it again.
You certainly can get the same results on your Weber. But you are going to have to do a little more work to keep the right temps, it's not going to last nearly as long (rust/etc.), you are going to use more "fuel", etc. I agree it's probably not worth spending 10x's the price for most. But some people just happen to have that money, so why not.
And back to BGE being overpriced. In my research, it really seems like they are the only ones who nickel and dime you to death. Most others will come with a base and all you really need/want is the heat shield and you can get that for <$50 (unless it's BGE, then it's $130).

BGE is better sure but not 5x or 10x better to justify the price against other alternatives.

LOL at rationalizing wasteful spending. I make plenty of money. If I wanted to waste it on one these I could.
Six months ago, I might have agreed with you. My wife was pushing for us to get a BGE for a long time and we finally did. One of the best purchases I've ever made.
We barely even use the kitchen anymore. Everything that comes out of that thing is magic and I say that as someone that has been grilling for over 20 years.
