I have been reliably informed, right here in the OT, that all our kids should go to college, and that the trades are NOT an honorable profession,

Then you haven’t been here very long. OT relentlessly white knights the trades, and extolls the virtue of other peoples children bypassing college.

Yeah, my older brother is an MBA/CPA. I have worked a wide variety of jobs, from managerial to grunt.

He's always been more of a number/statistical nerd, I was the one who found trouble.

I couldnt do what he does simply because my brain gets bored crunching numbers. No way I could make a career out of it, sacrificing 40 hours a week look at statistics and numbers. I found I excelled in operations, planning and controlling movements in real time and dealing with people.

Could it be that they are lumping together Welders, Cutters, Solderers, and Brazers?

Trim carpenters

So how much dem Trim carpenters make and how does one go about learning to be one. Seriously on the learning to be one part.

We talking about regular trim work or people that do really intricate shite? Is it just that hard to find people willing to work? I did all the trim work on my first house, a cabin and a lake house. My partner and I built the cabinets and did most of the trim work on a renovation/add on we did to our office. Granted, he's got a nice shop and every tool, nail, screw, adhesive etc you could ever imagine.

Maybe we need to quit and start doing trim work. I hate tedious shite though. I've seen some closets and cabinets that had more crooks and angles than Washington DC. He'd be better at those with his OCD.

Saw those welders in S LA in July in their welder clothing / gear in 95-degree, 100% humidity weather…and thought what wage, over a career of that misery, would be worth that

Well yeah, the south is a shithole though.

If you want to make money in trade work, you work up north where base rates are $40-50/hr.

You can be pro business and realize what these massive companies and people at the top of these companies are doing. They do not give a single frick about their fellow Americans and supplying this country with jobs. They will (and have been) sell you out in heartbeat for a cheap foreigner or completely eliminate jobs with AI. Only the rich will get richer while the middle class will continue to decline.

Maybe the govt should stop favoring BigCorp over small/medium size businesses.

Perhaps we should stop bailing out failing corporations.

Welders who work at Alyeska pipeline make 200k a year. Friend of mine just divorced one, the money he makes doing that is kinda shocking for a permanent site welding position. She got enough of his cash in the divorce to buy a house in Spokane, no note.

Are you encouraging baws to become welders? Or women to marry a welder and then file for divorce?

No shite. Fiscal and monetary policy have made saving dollars obsolete. When saving is no longer attractive, new capital is allocated to assets. This causes assets to appreciate at a far greater rate than CPI which disproportionately hurts people that live at the economic margins of our society.

Trim carpenters make more money than most doctors.

Was this sarcasm, or are you just that high on a Sunday afternoon?

Where are finish carpenters making more than $120 an hour?

Median doc salery in the US is $240k and the average is right at $400k. Those numbers are low compared to medium and larger cities which is where finish carpenters can make the best money running complex trim in houses bought by... doctors et al.

Understand this: we aren't getting out of this high-inflation scenario without a recession. Jerry's talk of a "soft landing" has always been as much of a pipe dream as his talk of post-COVID inflation being "transitory". You can't frick over your supply chain and your money supply (M2) like we saw during COVID without serious problems. By "serious problems" I mean a recession. This becomes even more problematic when you factor in that consumers have continued to run up nearly a trillion in new debt each year in order to avoid having to change their lifestyles.

Be it the debt or social security, we better fricking hope we get a group of politicians who recognize that really unpopular policy is going to have to be passed or were absolutely frickED economically.

Taxes have to increase, especially on the wealthy. Social security can no longer be capped. Social security needs to be means tested. We need to cut a shite ton of spending and the DoD can’t be exempt from the cuts. CEO pay should be capped. I love Trump’s suggestion of moving SEC quarterly filings to a biannual occurrence in hopes of workers not getting RIF’d left and right to meet quarterly expectations. Wages need to increase…the government can do this by dangling corporate goodies in return for increased payrolls. We need to get health care the frick out of private hands…the costs to Americans are incredible and hurts the middle class the most.

Now who thinks we’ll have politicians who have the balls to talk plainly to Americans to describe the situation we’re in and the things which need to happen? I’m not holding my breath.

The $100k H1B visa fee is going to be monumentally important going forward for grads of STEM programs.

Would be nice, but I disagree. I think companies will just lean harder on AI or will open offshore coding centers to avoid the H1B fee. They are focused on profit margins more than who they hire.

I have been paying in to social security my entire life and I had no choice. If I had been able to invest that money elsewhere then I would be a lot better off. I am now relying on that money when I retire. If I suddenly make too much money to claim my benefits I will go off the rails.
