Nurse.. I forgot about that part, but I will tell you this. That movie scared the hell out of me. And there was something that always freaked me out when a tv was on a scrambled channel.. I always pictured that little girl sitting in front of the tv...

They're like the ice-cream man, the older you get the creepier they look.

It’s made up. Like how every girl claims to hate the word “moist”

I can certainly understand how this clown face would frighten some people.

I’m a grown man, and while I don’t turn and run when I see one, I’m not a big fan of them. It’s all about the painted on smile over a scowl...they’re miserable human beings hiding behind paint. Same rule applies to women that wear to much makeup.

I'd have to think The Joker character from Batman also played a role. (Just did a quick search on google... The Joker was created around 1940, so there's a history of using a clown as a bad guy... though what I read also said the character was given a much darker turn in the 70s.)
Before that, there's probably a little bit of a creepy carnival connection... along the lines of freak shows and oddities (which makes sense in context of a clown typically having distorted or exaggerated features) as well as to gypsies & pagan/voodoo sensibilities.
At it's root, characters like It, The Joker, etc. (and even good guys, like Batman) play off the basic motif of someone who wears a mask... what's behind the mask doesn't necessarily match the exterior. For clowns like It, the idea is over-emphasized / made into a caricature by taking something that should be silly and making it malevolent.

Clowns don't bother me, but those porcelain dolls do. I once walked into my sister in law's bedroom after they built their house and she had about 30 of those things along the wall looking directly toward the bed. No f'ing way I'd sleep in that bed with those creepy things staring at me.

I’m a completely normal guy and clowns freak me out.
I’m specific, though.
Intentionally scary clowns do nothing to me.
Rodeo clowns don’t get a spike.
It’s only party clowns.
Can’t be in a room with one.

I worked with a 6'2" 240 pound 45 year old man who saw a midget walk in our shop and he took off running to his truck and drove off.

This reminds me of when a guy I knew had a college buddy in town, and he started teling "back in the day" stories. It came out that the guy I knew was terrified of clowns, so people would royally f with the guy. His buddy said that one time he put a little clown figurine on the guys night stand, and when he woke up he was staring right at it. Paralyzed the guy apparently, and all he did was stare at it and mumble "move it". So they apparently left it there for like 30 or so mins, and the guy nvr moved. Ha
Best part of it was, another buddy of another guy in my group, arrived at the tail end of the story, and didnt really hear what was being talked about. The guy took off his pullover, and he had a t-shirt with a massive clown face on it. We all broke out in laughter, t-shirt guy was f-ing confused, and the guy afraid of clowns just got up and left. Couldnt have been scripted any better. Ha!

I have a co-worker who is so afraid of clowns he can't go into McDonald's if they have the Ronald McDonald statue. He would legit run if he sees a clown. He said when he was little his parents took him to a circus and a clown picked him up and ran around the place with him. He has never saw IT and doesn't want to.
