It’s hard to see how the FBI can count these incidents, which make up 42 percent of its 160 cases, as “mass killings.” They plainly don’t fit the FBI’s old definition, which required four or more murders, nor even its new one of at least three murders.
A mass shooting is still a "mass shooting" even if less than three people died due to the shooting.
It's just how you want to define it. Do you want to call it "mass murder due to shooting" or just a "mass shooting"?

Mass public shootings have increased in frequency from 1.1 a year to 4.5 a year since the 1970s, according to a new report by the Congressional Research Service.
The report, sent to members of Congress on Friday, found that in the 1970s, mass public shootings killed roughly six people a year and injured two. From 2010 to 2013, there were an average of 33 deaths in mass shootings each year, with 28 additional people injured.

Mass killings are defined as singular or events with at least four victims who die within a short period of time. In mass public shootings, all the victims are killed with firearms in a public location such as a workplace, house of worship, school or restaurant.

A criminologist who studies mass killings called the report the "most comprehensive" look at the issue in the past 15 years. “It deserves our attention,” said Grant Duwe, a Minnesota criminologist whose own research provided one source of data for the study. "Hopefully their report if nothing else will foster a more honest dialogue about the patterns and prevalence about mass shootings."

No personal motives there

Way to open the back door for an escape when the truth about the methodology of the report comes out.

Believe what you want to believe. I think there are some people that believe these events are staged, and don't really happen. Others will believe that mass shootings are on the decline. It depends on your agenda.
But 2 minutes of research will allow people to decide for themselves if mass shootings are on the rise. I just provided some research data to assist them.

Those GoPro videos will be telling (assuming they recorded what they were doing).

Ummmm...I've provided 3 links, all with documented back up from the FBI, Harvard, and people who study mass shootings, with actual statistics.
But yeah......Mass shootings are on the decline.
You know, you can be against gun control, and still acknowledge the fact that mass shootings are on the rise, right?
I truly do love this board.

No it's the truth. You are a fricking moron though so I'm sure the truth is something you have trouble with.

Yep. This incident should not be on the "mass shooting" list.

Oh, I though we were looking at stats through 2015. But yeah, your stats from 1976-1979 are interesting and germane to this discussion as well.
Posted on 12/3/15 at 10:26 am to Festus
You quoted the report listing incorrect (or misleading) data from the 70s for the comparison.
That's from your post. If you don't want it to be germane, don't quote it.

It’s disheartening to see the FBI used to promote a political agenda,
Wake up. The FBI has been about political agendas and promoting itself since J. Edgar started it. Hell, they are the original masters of spin control. When they got caught hiding evidence and doing all sorts of illegal shite after Waco and the OKC bombing they had the following response to Congress: "Well if you had given us the money we requested for all new computers, none of this would have happened."
I remember laughing as I watched the Congressional panel stunned into silence at the balls it took for the Director to throw that in their face. The Bureau, while an asset to the American people, is absolutely a giant political machine from top to bottom. Don't ever doubt it.

I won't interject into this debate but why would it be such a leap to think that mass shootings are on the rise?
These insane people crave recognition and "fame". With our societies fixation on instant news and social media they are finding more ways to get it. These people were armed with cameras. They wanted to show what they did. Wanting to "go public" is now part of the crime, unlike the serial killer who self gratifies by remaining in the shadows.
The more important question is the "why" these people commit these acts and how can we ferret them out of our society before they take action. While maintaining our liberty.
Trying to regulate the means (guns, bombs, cars, etc.) they use to commit these acts is really the low hanging fruit.

I've provided 3 links. I copied and posted from each. Anyone reading this can go back and look at the links and decide.
But hey, continue to believe that mass shootings are on the decline. Freedom of speech, right?

Maybe so - I don't know on Earth, but based on the best stats we have, it is definitely pretty safe to live in America right now - compared to any time in history.
Mass shootings may be up, but that is probably a coincidence of the instant media and 24 hour news cycle. Add to it, this particular couple was almost certainly motivated/inspired by Jihad.
But, as for violent crime as a whole? It is at historical lows in the U.S.
