Fattest guy in world in 1890s, people paid money to see him

Today, he’d just be the fattest employee you’d see in a typical 30 person work office. He’d hardly be some off the walls fat person that people would pay money to see.

Homer Simpson is canonically 6'0 and weighs 239 lbs...and got stuck in a water slide and had to be evacuated by crane.
He got to stay home for disability when he ballooned up to 300 lbs.
In 1980, 0 NFL players weighed over 300 lbs.
By 1985, there were 15.
By 1990, there were 72.
By 1995, there were 152.
By 2000, there were 280.
By 2005, there were 371.
By 2010, there were 393.
By 2015, there were 427.
By 2020, there were 482.
He got to stay home for disability when he ballooned up to 300 lbs.
In 1980, 0 NFL players weighed over 300 lbs.
By 1985, there were 15.

a lot of that had to do with the blocking rules changing to prioritize length and sheer mass on the OL. A 330 lb tackle wouldn't have the agility to play under 1980 rules and a 240 lb tackle wouldn't have the size and strength to play under modern rules

I remember when I was a kid in the 90s and they used to make such a big deal of the Cowboys OL having a bunch of 300 lbers.

You’re being downvoted for this, but you’re absolutely right.
The huge OL of today wouldn’t be able to play under the old rules because they would be called for a holding foul on every play. The big OL couldn’t play if they couldn’t hold.

I think some of those Cowboys OL were well over 300 and I think the whole line except perhaps the center was over 300.
There were plenty 300lb OL in the 90s. Probably the majority. But there was still a lot of 280 and 290lb centers.

I worked with a 450lber he ended up getting to 520lb had surgery and then got down to 220lb. I watched that bastard eat an entire Hungry Howies pizza and wash it down with a 2 liter of Mountain Lightning every single day at lunch. Ya gotta be an absolute frickin pig to get that big.

I remember some years ago I turned on ESPN Classics just in time to see a rerun of the 1982 Iron Bowl. When they were showing the starting lineups of both Auburn and Alabama, I noticed all the offensive linemen weighed in the 250ish ballpark. Pretty amazing how things have changed since then.
