That was tough to watch. I'd have probably done the same thing. Except I have ninjy-like stealth moves, so I'd have got to the POS.
I'd have a bounty set up for the murderer's creative extrajudicial punishment culminating in his death in jail.
Incentivized more so if it's more painful and creative.

A sharpened piece of plastic/polymer/etc. laced with curare (or cyanide if you have means). The idea isn't to bleed him out, it's to simply break the skin enough.
There are other ways to get past metal detection that would require a bit of tech moxie that could also do the trick, but the rub is you have to make sure no innocent folks are affected.
