If the thief knew his life may be forfeit because of his acts, do you think he'd make the same choice?
There's a reason why shoplifting and petty theft has SKYROCKETED - the non-prosecution/nonsentence or outright bar from arrest for such crimes in a number if jurisdictions.

There are a few correct answers here on this thread.
You can only shoot if in fear of death or great bodily harm. That is measured by the reasonable man test.
I too caught a white thug breaking into my truck. Caught him with a driveway buzzer. Drew on him with a Ruger Super Blackhawk in 44 magnum. He tried bs'ing his way out of it, but eventually took off running. I did not feel like chasing him, so just had to let him go. The S.O. claimed they had units looking,
If many of the opinions and red down arrow checking people i see here are serious, you guys are going to wind up convicted.

The options are
A) file a police report and have them accomplish nothing
B) take it into their own hands and be made examples of by some Soros dem DA

The deceased nullified his human life when he began stealing from others. I personally wouldn't have shot him if he was leaving, but I have little remorse for him.
What you are failing to understand is the long game. If thieves were constantly killed in the act, theft would almost cease to exist entirely. That goes for most crime. But let's look at the current alternative. As of now, if your caught you get 3 hots and a cot, and will probably get out extremely early on overcrowding or good behavior.
They are literally walking in and out of San Francisco stores stealing and cops are watching them because of the liberal laws that are put in place there.

Would he have to jack up a Prius to get under it to steal it?
If so...no shots fired.

This goes both ways, why did the thief think the converter was possibly worth his life?
I personally wouldn't go out of my way to kill a thief, but when you go around people's houses or property and commit crimes you're always taking a chance.

Tell everyone where you live so we can come get your stuff. And yes, I've had thieves steal my tools that I use to earn money to feed my family. So I am okay with killing these pieces of shite.

that does not have absolute moral clarity.
There are certain things I'd kill a rabid thug for doing that I would not kill a poor down on his luck person for.
There are certain things I'd let anyone steal without feeling the urge to take his life.
There are no absolute moral statements.
There are absolute definitions of laws and consequences. As long as those are applied equally the need to 'take matters in your own hands' is diminished.
When the 'law' becomes just another political weapon used to subjugate political opponents and benefit political supporters, the fundamental concept of 'law' disappears, and people are left to their own moral codes and financial status to make life/death decisions.
We are well into an era defined by the latter.

They are worth more than the person trying to steal them.

Depends on the human and the material possessions

Why not? I have given my life in acquiring my personal property; given up a lifetime to labor and sacrifice. I was up at 5:00am and will toil all day to hold and maintain my hard earned personal property?
Why should someone not expect to give up a lifetime if they attempt to steal from me? Why would anyone expect to take my life's work at no risk to their life?
