This is what I think too. But you have people coming in here that act like there are healthy people just dropping dead from the flu. It absolutely scares people but it's not really true and i wish people would give the public all the facts.

Many of the deaths actually are in healthy children. The strain going around is one which has mutated in a way that lowers your entire immune system so much that secondary infections or viruses can lead to death. Your immune system gets lowered while fighting the current strain of flu, thus making the body susceptible to secondary infections such as sinus infections, ear infections, staph infections, etc.. Once that happens, then your lowered immune system begins to fight two things at once. Many young and elderly bodies can't handle that and eventually succumb. A few healthy adults have fallen victim to this current strain of flu for the same reason as well. It's just mostly children and the elderly.

But to say that the majority of the people dying from the flu this year already suffered from another health condition is ignorant. Yes, that's the case in some but from what I've read, it's the secondary infections caused by a lowered immune system that's killing people right now.

GET YOUR FLU SHOT, PEOPLE!

How do you figure? Show me one case where it was a perfectly healthy person WITHOUT any possible underlying issues that exacerbated it.

The kid had cystic fibrosis, is the flu shot safe for those patients?

This just happened to my buddies dad. He got the flu and it really weakened his immune system and then he got upper resp infection and in one week he was dead. Pretty sad.....

About half of the children who have been hospitalized this season for flu-related causes have no underlying conditions, and Jernigan said about half of the 53 children who died were "otherwise healthy."

The 2017-18 flu season "unquestionably falls into the bucket of a severe year," Fauci said.

Nobody's arguing that the overall NUMBERS are worse. The argument that's taking place here is that it's a much more severe and serious strain of flu and that there are much higher percentages of otherwise healthy children that's contracting secondary infections while fighting this flu strain and are dying.

Stick to the correct topic of debate at hand, here. You must be a liberal. You debate like one.

I don't know what would be harder -- having to say goodbye knowing it's your last time talking to them or not being able to comfort their fear knowing it's the last time they're talking to you. My God. frick this thread, I know I made it but frick this thread. I'm going back to work.

From my experience with my son, not being able to say goodbye. I had four months and had the chance to love him as hard as I could every day until he passed.

Saying "GET YOUR FLU SHOT, PEOPLE!" is a little ignorant. Yes, the flu shot may help decrease symptoms faster vs not having the flu shot, the flu shot is only 20%-30-% effective to this year's strain.

There is a condition that some individuals may have that causes a cytokine storm. This is most often fatal. Causes death in many never expected to die.

They don't know the cause of death in that one. Still have yet to see the results.

This kid also has cystic fibrosis, which I suspect played a large roll in this. I have lots of friends who know this family well. Very sad.
this is key. I had a student years ago of died of cystic fibrosis. She was in high school. Now, I don't know for sure it was the CF, but that was always the cause of death given by the family, and they were a fine, upstanding family. No other known illness.

Officially from the coroner, no. However, she got the flu and it lead to Pneumonia then passed. Common sense says it is likely the cause.

Another issue is sometimes the flu or other viruses causes your bodies immune system to over react and in the process, causes a lot of damage internally to a lot of your organs to the point where they fail. Cytokine storms is what its called

Its rare that it will do that but it does happen. Thats another reason healthy people drop dead from this.
