FAA’s diversity push includes focus on hiring people with ‘severe intellectual’ and ‘psychiatric’ disabilities

The Federal Aviation Administration is actively recruiting workers who suffer “severe intellectual” disabilities, psychiatric problems and other mental and physical conditions under a diversity and inclusion hiring initiative spelled out on the agency’s website.

“Targeted disabilities are those disabilities that the Federal government, as a matter of policy, has identified for special emphasis in recruitment and hiring,” the FAA’s website states. “They include hearing, vision, missing extremities, partial paralysis, complete paralysis, epilepsy, severe intellectual disability, psychiatric disability and dwarfism.”

The initiative is part of the FAA’s “Diversity and Inclusion” hiring plan, which claims “diversity is integral to achieving FAA’s mission of ensuring safe and efficient travel across our nation and beyond.”

The FAA’s website shows the agency’s guidelines on diversity hiring were last updated on March 23, 2022.

The FAA, which is overseen by Secretary Pete Buttigieg’s Department of Transportation, is a government agency charged with regulating civil aviation and employs roughly 45,000 people.

Not one to be hyperbolic over these sorts of stories, but there should never be a reason to intentionally push to hire people with psychiatric disabilities.

They gonna start making quotas for personality disorders along with skin color now?

Why, because ATC is one of the most stressful jobs with one of the greatest responsibilities attached. Just because you don’t fly anywhere doesn’t mean others should be put at risk by hiring people who have any type of mental issues. Scary that this doesn’t make sense to you.

I’m legit OCD and can tell you I would be amazing in a control tower… until I hyper focused on one thing to the point of complete distraction or became overwhelmed by the sheer number of details that needed to be monitored at once and shut down.

High stress environments are triggers that can overcome even the most practised and balanced of us.

Isn’t this what the fed gov typically hires? Now they are just more open about it. Explains things.
