First, how TF is it moral or ethical to charge that much for any drug? I get that it’s not cheap but my God that is ridiculous!

For one thing, it's not uncommon for companies to spend billions developing drugs that ultimately fail. Those costs have to be recovered from the rare winners, and if the patient population isn't large enough, costs will naturally be high. Drug costs are like 10-15% of health care expenditures anyway. Go after "big (bad) pharma," you'll get even fewer breakthroughs, and you're not going to reduce total expenditures by all that much. The whole industry has evolved under a dysfunctional system, and everyone in it needs to take a haircut. Part of that has to be changing practices. For example, we spend an awful lot of money at the very end of life on shite that mainly prolongs suffering.

I agree completely. Health care in this country is worse than a third world country!!! Stick people in this country are seen as throwaways!!! Am and RN. It is just sickening what happens to people!!! Has anyone checked to see if the pharma that make the drug might provide assistance?

Cancer sucks. The future is immunotherapy (making a vaccine for the cancer cells, so your body thinks the cancer cells is a pathogen). These trials are going on now. Look into clinical trials.

Prayers to you and your family.

With that being said, your statement is ignorant for the simple reason that there are so many types of cancers that there will never be a singular cure and for the fact that there are "cures" for some variations of cancer already.

smartest thing i've read in this thread so far...

There is not a cure for cancer because cancer is not one disease. Cancer is essentially different for every organ, and each organ has different types of cancer. It isn’t one disease, it is thousands. And we have developed drugs for a lot of these. There is no conspiracy. Cancer sucks, and when you lose a loved one it is easy to focus that anger on someone else. I understand. I’ve been there. I agree that our healthcare and big pharma sucks, but not donating to cancer research is not the answer

Good way to go if you have the means. I hope you have $10million+ saved and allocated to medical treatment if you plan to have no insurance and plan to pay out of pocket for you, your spouse, and your children for their lifetime. Most people have no clue how much medical treatment costs for traumatic brain injuries and/or spinal cord injuries, daily rehab and the potential total care.

Well, according to OP you would need 10+ million saved up even if you do have insurance because they’ll screw you over regardless.

you do realize insurance companies are obligated to act on behalf of their shareholders, by law, if they are a publicly traded company, right? one of the only ways they can cut and/or contain costs is to deny claims and constantly update formularies based on new costs comparisons....

only one model takes this profit motive out of healthcare... i'll let you guess which one...

We have reasons to complain of course, but please go to Sri Lanka, Kenya, Mexico, Venezuela, Iran, Egypt, Romania, Russia, Estonia, Pakistan, Vietnam, Iraq, Syria, Greece, Turkey, ... and 99% of all other countries and let me know your experience.

Bitch, please.

Yep, my dad is on a 2 month drug program that bills at $88000. His out of pocket? $0. Combination of Medicare and manufacturer's discount.

So yea, call the manufacturer.

No offense to you, but I’m not one hundred percent sure you aren’t retarded

Anyone who thinks there is a “cure” for cancer floating around doesn’t really have any understanding of what cancer is

First I am assuming it is a BCBS plan.

She needs to clarify the denial- was it considered an off label use or we want them to use something else first....

Second I am sure an appeal is going on after the denial and the BCBS plan has to respond usually within 15 to 45 days about the denial. There may be gap coverage by the manufacturer for the drug look into their PAP programs. Go to the manufacturers website.
And look at all the documents and fill them out. Call the 1800 numbers provided.
She has to likely appeal the denial to get free drug or assistance. It’s a word game now she has a denial for coverage not a lack of coverage. There is a difference in terms of how these programs are allowed to give out funds and provide financial assistance.

Also need to see if BCBS is managing that portion of her plan or is there a chemotherapy carve out that was sold to a company like Magellan to manage.

Also look into Good Days Chronic Disease Fund, Healthwell, PANF, they are all foundations that will assist patients with monetary grants to cover out of pocket costs.
Check all of the sites to see if they cover her diagnosis.
