Really sad stat I saw last week, 40% of people who get cancer end up going through all their life savings paying for treatment with co-pays, deductibles, no insurance ,etc.
I forget the number, but the % of bankruptcies due to medical expenses is really high. And yes, fvck cancer

I'm sorry your aunt is having to go through this.
The Arkansas State Employee insurance plans is a self-funded plan. Which basically means the state pays out claims and only pays the insurance company to administer the plan. Since the state owns the plan, they (and their pharmacy benefit manager) determine what's covered and what's not. I hope she's able to get the determination changed, but the state will have to do it.

Money wont save anyone. We all die
Its best to accept that limitation, and not bankrupt your family, just to stay with them an extra few months

They all do this....home, car, medical. Do not count on insurance to be there when you really need it.

Because cancer treatment is different, it's very expensive and often ongoing.
Health insurance is a great thing, but like many things has limitations and has lifetime cap.

Its a scam for productive people because they have to subsidize everyone else who doesn't contribute. For example, A single CT machine can cost 3 million, then add the massive bills to keep it running, compensating the radiologist and staff, the list goes on. People take for granted the US's high standard of healthcare. Sure Hospital's and Clinics could go back to charging people like they did in the 70's but that'd also going back to that level of care. It'd be "fair" to provide people the services they can afford but thats not how it works. It doesn't matter if you go to the ER for a bullshite reason and can't afford a CT. You're still going to get one anyway because if they don't then they can turn around and sue.

Biggest culprit? Are you kidding or just trolling? Or is the anti-government shtick so strong that you’ll blame any agency as quickly as possible.

I disagree. It should not matter what or how much my particular insurance company wants to cover in order for my Dr to give me the very best recovery option.

I agree the cap is BS.
I was speaking more of the value of insurance rather than "what's the point"? comment.

healthy people would benefit more just paying self pay. If my insurance wasn’t provided by my employer, I would serious consider this.
Either way, when you really need insurance for something tragic, they pull stuff like this all the time.
My goal is to be self insured for my home within the next 5 years.

100% accurate. There are so many different types of cancer that it's ridiculous to hear "find the cure for cancer," as if it's a single entity. Testicular cancer, if caught early enough (thankfully they usually are), is 100% curable, just pop that testicle right out. Stomach cancer caused by H. Pylori is cured by taking antibiotics of all things. Cervical cancer is not only curable in the early stages, but preventable with vaccines. Lymphoma has a high cure rate as well.
Bad types of cancer to get: ovarian cancer, pancreatic cancer, renal cell carcinoma, lung cancer, and the list goes on.

I disagree, healthy people can and do have traumatic injuries and are very costly.
Catastrophic insurance is better than none at all.

By self insured I mean I would have the savings built up for such catastrophic event.
Each year, I wouldn’t have to pay hefty premiums and if catastrophic event occurs, I’ve got it covered. If it doesn’t, more money for me or my kids to inherit.
Heathy people pay far more in insurance premiums than insurance pays for the 1-2 time dr visit a year.

Good way to go if you have the means. I hope you have $10million+ saved and allocated to medical treatment if you plan to have no insurance and plan to pay out of pocket for you, your spouse, and your children for their lifetime.
Most people have no clue how much medical treatment costs for traumatic brain injuries and/or spinal cord injuries, daily rehab and the potential total care.

I seem to remember it was the Democrats who pushed Obamacare thru...
Posted on 10/20/18 at 4:21 pm to kingfish225
Why? Because I don’t buy into everything documentaries like What The Health are pushing? That’s fricking ridiculous. Most documentaries only look at something from one side. You’ll be hard pressed to find one that doesn’t.

So from that one statement you think I’m a socialist? LOL!!! I am one of the people who is furthest from socialism you will find. Just because I think the price of the drug is ridiculous does not mean I don’t believe in free market capitalism. However, that price is outrageous and if you don’t believe that you are insane.
