"The helmet makes use of six cameras embedded in the skin of the plane to give pilots a 360-degree view of the surrounding airspace, including enabling them to "look through" the floor of the plane. Plus it has advanced night-vision capabilities built in; and the heads-up-display projects directly onto the visor, putting information like altitude, speed and targets right in front of the pilots' eyes."

Still can't imagine how a helmet would cost $400,000, even with all of these technologies.

Probably 25K to build, in a normal market maybe reach 50-75k max price. But because, the government spends money like a drunken degenerate, especially in the name of war, the taxpayers get a 400k price tag.

I'll explain it to you. You see, the poster you replied to was driving the joke into the ground to the point it wasn't funny any more.

Agree.

At some point, someone needs to say build us a helmet for $100k and let the free market fight it out to see who can build the best helmet.

Didn't find anything other than blurred photos. Almost like they didn't want anyone to know.

Lockheed Martin doesn't want you to know the cost specifics. R&D, actual production costs vs. how much they are fleecing the U.S. Taxpayers for.

F35 is the biggest waste of money in DoD history. Don't worry though, no one in the Pentagon will lose his job, or his bonus, or promotion; and none of the suppliers will be investigated for gouging or intentionally failing to meeting contract requirements in order to get program extensions etc. Patriotism has a different meaning at that level.

from the story:

quote:

Issues were raised anew about the plane earlier this year, after a test flight pitting the F-35 against an F-16.

An internal Lockheed Martin memo, first leaked by the website "War is Boring," showed that the F-35 was having difficulty dogfighting against the older aircraft.

"The F-35 was at a distinct energy disadvantage in a turning fight," the report said, and when it came to trying to operate the aircraft in a high angle of attack, "it wasn't effective for killing or surviving attacks," the report said.

Basically the exact analysis provided by John Boyd about every bloated incapable fighter the DOD has built since the F-16.

If you red books-- Book about Boyd

Lockheed Martin had to design the helmet to the specs provided by the DOD which can sometimes be ridiculous. This helmet was probably designed to function in temperature and G Force excursions that a pilot would never survive. About 30 years ago the Army sought vendors for a fax machine to use in the field, it had to remain functional from -75 to 135 degrees F, it ended up costing $52K per unit.
