F-150 charity or sell?

Situation: i’m not a ‘car guy’ or backyard mechanic, so fixing myself is not an option.
2003 F-150, 1 owner, 240k miles: new rear end, tires in great shape, new battery and new thermostat. Good physical condition.
It was running absolutely fantastic until I started to have a leak in the head gasket which is causing the vehicle to overheat.
As you can see by the description above, I am throwing good money after bad. It doesn’t make sense for me to spend the $$ to fix the head gasket. However I’m thinking somebody who is a backyard mechanic can fix it cheap and have a decent second-hand truck.
Is it worth the effort of trying to sell it? And if so how much would you ask? Or should I just donate it to charity and write it off?

Most of the charities are scams

Facebook marketplace, translate ad to Spanish. In two days it will be pulled by an Astrovan to Mexico.

Now that the standard deduction has been upped you'd probably be better off selling it.

I just sold a 99 F150 that had belonged to my departed brother. It had some body damage and needed a good bit of interior work, but had only about 114,000 miles. I sold it for $2200 to a working guy whose work truck had quit on him. He needed it and was appreciative for the good price, and I made space and some money. Worked for both of us.

If you're going to make a claim like this, you might as well come with some proof. Or at minimum a "don't donate the truck to ____ charity, they aren't good stewards of gifts"...

There are tons of legitimate charities you can donate cars to. However, the absolute max you'll get is the KBB value then you'll actually get a deduction amount based on your tax bracket. KBB estimate of that truck is likely $3k at most which means you can write off ~$700 most likely. If you're not itemizing then this doesn't help you at all. If you are then you just need to decide if $700 off taxes is worth more than ~$3k cash that we all know you're not going to report since most people put the sale price on the paperwork way lower than what they actually sold the vehicle for.

Your link is talking about these random "Donate your vehicle to charity sites" that operate as middlemen.
Any donor should do their research and only donate the vehicle directly to the charitable entity.
So your claim is false. Most charities aren't scams. There are scams out there where middlemen pose as charities or intermediaries providing little benefit to the intended charitable organization.

Whatever dude
To the OP - donate it to Golfer, he's a fricking expert at this

Crap like your original post in this thread gets spewed in here as fact almost weekly without any basis. If you want to shite on a particular charity, or situation you experienced or read about, fine.
But if the OP donates his vehicle to a charity like St. Vincent de Paul, or the Bridge/Grace House, he's not getting "scammed" as you claim.

It's a bitch changing the head gasket on a V8 F150. I think book is around 20 hrs of labor time ($2,000ish for labor only). Most every mechanic will recommend a used engine swap or most likely say no thanks.

Psh, I watched a couple YouTube vids and had it done in a little over a half day.

Then do that. It's still cheaper than buying a replacement vehicle that the history will be unknown on and not have all the recent new parts this truck has.
