The most amazing thing about that is the special anti-radar paint the Blue Angels use on their birds that makes them look like F-18's from a distance.....

Gamechanger right there folks.

Thanks. I didn't know the Blue Angel was just the name of the type of plane. So it is basically a F-14 but not called that? I guess they call it a Blue Angel so people know it is a special kind of F-14? All I know is I told my son it was the same plane that was on Top Gun because he loves that movie. Made him want to join the Air Force and fly one of those babies!

Also, you have a photo there of one with its wings tucked back like they do in Top Gun. I noticed the Blue Angels never do that maneuver in there show. I guess it has something to do with danger zone? Explains the song in the movie.

Was that the last of our planes that used to fly with the bright paint schemes?

They look frickin sweet and it ain't like some flat gray paint is gonna hide that huge fricker from anybody anyway. We should revert all of our navy war planes back to war paint schemes in the name of global swag.

The Tomcat was faster but had airframe issues due to age and design. Full airframe inspection required after every supersonic flight. It was to costly to upgrade, and still would have been inferior to Gen-5 fighters.

The Super Hornet will receive an upgrade.

Blue Angels fly that FA-18 C Hornet, but will be moving to the Superhornet by 2020. The Tomcat never flew with the Blue Angels.

Just my attempt at humor man. Glad I could make a few chuckle. My cousin was a USMC pilot and he flew the F/18 in Desert Shield. He flew Harriers before that. I am not an aviation expert like some here but I do know the difference in the two planes being discussed.

Some of the delivered paint schemes were pretty elaborate. Corrosion was/is a nonstop battle and the paint was difficult to keep looking good. Touch up was with rattle can and usually the paint wasn't a good match. Towards the end of a long cruise, they started looking kinda rough. Though nobody wanted the gray, but it was much easier to keep up with.

I had heard that salt water spray was hard on the jets but Jesus. That's a nightmare.
