Drew...are you a Fury Girl, Horny Horse or Mr. Bones? Only eagle drivers or maintainers of TY tails would understand.

Check out some of Snodgrass' work with the 14. Truly amazing pilot that got the most out of the bird.

What is a plasma shield? ETA: From Googling it, looks kind of effective military wise but who knows what sketchy uses will be used.

In Starcraft it made your units a lot tougher because you had to wear down the shield first before they took damage.

In real life, I have no idea.

Or Controllers

I don't have a coin for the 2nd Fighter Squadron, sadly...

Can't understand why the Navy couldn't upgrade the Tomcat. Thoughts from knowledgeable people?

In the initial moments of the war in Afghanistan, the Tomcat was brought back into service as it had a superior range over the F-18

My father helped design the F-14's weapon systems. I grew up going to the Grumman factory and watching the F14D being assembled. I love that aircraft

In a strictly missile environment I believe the Tomcat would beat the Hornet by the very fact it could fire a Phoenix missile at a target from 100 miles away.

The Tomcat was also equipped with a TV camera that could spot targets from 40 miles out. Thus giving an additional sensor without emitting anything.

Cool video. The F-4 sure produce a lot of exhaust.

The Phoenix was more of a HVAA killer. Not really reliable against fighter jet size threats (MiGs, Sus, etc). They were designed to take out bomber threats to their fleet or strategic bombing lanes inbound to a point of interest the fleet was designated to protect.

Plus, the F-14 wasn't a very good bomber. The Hornet/Super Hornet is much more versatile for the various missions of the Navy & Marines. Solid air-to-air capabilities and a pretty good air-to-ground support fighter. The F-14 had a massive radar cross section on it. Could see it coming from 100 miles out. Not really advantageous in a VFR fight against smaller, more maneuverable jets. The F/A-18 would easily defeat F-14 long range missile shots in an aware fight. Once inside 10 miles, the 18 would out-maneuver the 14.

All that said, the F-14 was sexy as Hell, though. Of course, the movie added to the lore.

For any nerds here interested you can download a game from the app store called air fighters that is pretty good. It is free and fun to play. You can buy air fighters pro which allows in flight refueling. I play this shite out of it.

TOmcats were much more complex and expensive to fly and maintain for starters.

Tomcat was designed from the get go to be a long range interceptor more than a muti role strike fighter.

Negative canyon...... several tomcat squadrons were still in the fleet as of the start of the war in afghanistan

speaking as someone who witnessed one of the few US Navy F-14 shoot downs.

Not so fast. The Bombcat was a pretty good platform. Inside 10 miles? Those parameters aren't really measurable and it depends. The 14 may not be as quite as maneuverable as a legacy Hornet, but since the Super Hornets aren't as maneuverable as the legacy this really doesn't fly.

I love watching the Blue Angels fly the F-14s in formation. Saw them at an air show last year and ended up learning a ton about the F-14 as well as the history of the Blue Angels. My son now wants to fly that plane as a member of the Blue Angels. Dream big....amrite?!
