Might want to ask the folks at the Chalmette refinery or the Torrance, CA refinery about Exxon being hesitant to sell a refinery that doesn’t fit long term plans. And Baton Rouge doesn’t look like a very good long term investment when the governor and local officials don’t want you here.

I can't speak for the CA refinery, but I know a lot of people at Chalmette Refining - both in management and operator baws - and they are doing quite fine with the new owners.

I know there was A LOT of concern with the sale. But so far it seems like all is well.

From the statement:
quote:

“...The perception of Baton Rouge has become one of inconsistent treatment from one company to another...” “...Our company must reassess previously-projected costs for these expansion projects. This may include a reduction in investments that grow jobs, expand operations or support community projects.”

“ExxonMobil's decision and statement today is a wake-up call. ExxonMobil has been the picture of corporate partnership, and extremely generous in their support of community groups, charities and nonprofits, most significantly to education and education charities,” the Baton Rouge Area Chamber said in a prepared statement. “What signal will Baton Rouge send now? In the wake of recent announcements of manufacturing layoffs it is painfully obvious that East Baton Rouge must demonstrate that it wants manufacturing investment and jobs. If East Baton Rouge wants additional investments from ExxonMobil or other manufacturers, it must do so resoundingly and quickly.”

in Louisiana,

See, this is where I think XOM is just being whiny.

I get if they don't want to deal with EBR anymore. But there are PLENTY of communities in LA that would welcome them with open arms.

The ITEP is no longer automatic, which it never should have been automatic. But, the fact that one or two communities doesn't want to be reasonable, doesn't mean that there aren't plenty of others that can see benefits from this.

I'm also guessing XOM got word that the Metro Council was gonna shoot down the ITEP application for their portion of the taxes. At least I hope they did, otherwise, this is grandstanding.

No the public schools suffer in Alabama because of the demographics

Why do people think we should have to pay for public schools and pay to send your own kids to private schools?

Same here.

It’s almost sad how dumb the local government there acts. Some of the most ignorant people in Louisiana are making these stupid decisions that are also unfortunately, extremely important. Dumb

You don't understand how this works. XOM skips on doing a plant upgrade in EBR, but moves forward on upgrades to another facility in another state, say MS or TX. Then, when a project comes up , the different facilities bid on it and gives cost projections and they evaluate ROI. BR is no longer the better ROI and it misses out on the project. Instead, that project may go to MS or TX facility. And the snowball gets bigger and bigger...

The GP Plant that just closed, got shot down a few months ago for ITEP...coincidence???

Since we in Texas are generally thankful people, I presume we should send the brisket with our thanks to TBR?

I've said something similar before. The refinery and its jobs aren't going anywhere. It's too valuable. But what can happen is Exxon selling to an efficiency-modeled independent refiner like BPF or Alon who already have a presence in LA. Then there won't be any talk of expansion and modernization projects to worry about, and TBR can watch all of that community involvement and outreach dry up.

Isn’t that precious

I’m sure more money for EBR schools will magically solve the problem. Not like they don’t already pay more per kid than most areas. Nor do they pay way more per when compared to places like Katy or Cypress in Texas.

It will surely overcome the shite situations these kids face at home.

If there is no modernization projects then the risk the refinery and its jobs leaving increases big time. That makes no sense. Other more modern plants will take over and eventually it'll make sense to just shut down here.

Public Education suffers in the South because of a culture that doesn't take responsibility for their own lives.

Bama got that $3 billion steel plant over Louisiana in ~08. Never Forget. I'm still mad.

The Advocate: "Exxon drops tax break requests after being rejected by EBR school board"

"Unfortunately, the perception of Baton Rouge has become one of inconsistent treatment from one company to another, a lack of predictability and confusion among local elected officials, who are inundated with misinformation from activist groups," the company said. "We question if anti-business activist groups are opposed to the state ITEP rules or just opposed to ExxonMobil’s participation in the program."

"This toxic atmosphere led the school board to vote to oppose the company's recent applications for additional investments," BRAC President and CEO Adam Knapp said in a statement. "The tone has gotten to the point where this company has chosen voluntarily today to withdraw its application at a $6 million expense to the company, rather than continue to endure this circus."

Here is the full statement from Exxon

At least Louisiana still has its superior education system, advanced infrastructure, lack of crime, and business friendly legal climate to differentiate itself from Texas.

Anyone got details or links to what EWE did to try and tax and/or run off Exxon in the 70s? I remember reading something about the tension and such but no idea now where I saw it.

Probably not his biography. Just interesting that this is happening again.
