Is there really any way to prevent people from abusing these accommodations?

I completely understand that some students truly do need these accomodations. I’m talking about the students who see their friends getting extended time or test read aloud or always given a formula sheet or whatever else there is. and they aren’t getting them, so they go home and tell their parents, then the parents bitch to the right people and somehow get their kids all these accommodations.

A lot of times students do not like to use accomodations because it singles them out in front of their peers.

Higher Ed institutions have varying degrees to which they provide/approve the use of accomodations. many require psychoeducational testing that can cost $500-$2000 to complete

Most Secondary Ed require simple doctor's notes but the schools convene a review panel (IEP or 504) to review each case.

Accomadations are only made with an official diagnoses of a problem and with an IOP.

Accommodations are fine in some settings (probably through HS, if applied with some diligence). After all, who cares if some kid gets a leg up doing it. It's fairly unlikely those kids are doing anything amazing with their lives anyway.

In college and grad school? Different story. At some point, your inherent limitations of ability are just part of your overall package, right? I don't have a photographic memory, which puts me behind other people in professional school. At one point is your disorder just something you'll have to battle if you want to compete on a given level?

Are the students failing the classes that they're wanting accommodations in? That should be the first barrier, and I don't mean D's.

The kids that get these accommodations have to have a legitimate learning disorder (or health issue) and go through a strict evaluation by the school system. You don't just complain and get these accommodations. If they are getting them by complaining then the teachers are doing it on their own and I suppose that is their choice but it should be fair to all students if the teacher does that.

I am a special education teacher and I can assure you, the majority (99%) of these kids are struggling to PASS. They are not using these accommodations to get scholarships and end up top 10 in their class.

It was such bullshite in law school when you are graded against each other that perfectly capable students with "ADD/ADHD" were getting 2 extra hours on test.

We had two people in our Engineering class that received an extra 2-3 hours of testing time.

Kinda pissed they received the same degree we did.

Real life doesn't give you this accommodation. Why should college?!

Actually, the better school systems do not base academic modifications or accommodations on medical information alone. The school system should administer their own battery of tests through an evaluation process where medical history is a piece of a much larger puzzle.

I just see students bitch that they have to turn their test in after 90 minutes and a few of their friends get another 45 minutes, if they need it. The law is something like time and a half for extended time test takers. The students who are bitching aren’t failing, they just want to try and get a better grade.

In real life you don't have to memorize a bunch of shite and take a test on it

You'll almost always have reference material available at any time.

I don't. If you're slow or have other problems that hinder your test taking abilities then maybe furthering your education is not the right path.

But in Engineering, a difference of 0.2 GPA can cost you thousands of dollars more times than not.

If your legs don't work and you need a wheelchair, maybe going out to places isn't the right path.

Where do you teach? You can pretend you're a parent with this question but you're 100% a teacher.
