It's a funeral dirge to a sexually physical relationship that never really was mutual love.

Song’s about King David and Bathsheba and Samson and Delilah, loves gone very wrong. Started being used at Christmas in 2010. Wow, who knew?

It’s about king David, and then some other biblical figures who were led astray by love (Solomon and Samson)

It’s about heartache and loss and isolation, being in a dying relationship, and what it does to a man. It’s a heart wrenchingly beautiful song

Another cohen song. Love his style

Famous Blue Raincoat
It's four in the morning, the end of December
I'm writing you now just to see if you're better
New York is cold, but I like where I'm living
There's music on Clinton Street all through the evening
I hear that you're building your little house deep in the desert
You're living for nothing now, I hope you're keeping some kind of record
Yes, and Jane came by with a lock of your hair
She said that you gave it to her
That night that you planned to go clear
Did you ever go clear?
Ah, the last time we saw you you looked so much older
Your famous blue raincoat was torn at the shoulder
You'd been to the station to meet every train, and
You came home without Lili Marlene
And you treated my woman to a flake of your life
And when she came back she was nobody's wife
Well I see you there with the rose in your teeth
One more thin gypsy thief
Well, I see Jane's awake
She sends her regards
And what can I tell you my brother, my killer
What can I possibly say?
I guess that I miss you, I guess I forgive you
I'm glad you stood in my way
If you ever come by here, for Jane or for me
Well, your enemy is sleeping, and his woman is free
Yes, and thanks, for the trouble you took from her eyes
I thought it was there for good so I never tried
And Jane came by with a lock of your hair
She said that you gave it to her
That night that you planned to go clear

It's about love, lamentation, and exultation. Pretty easy song to decipher lyrically, I don't get what the confusion is about.

Cohen's version is rarely the one you hear at Christmas.

ETA: The best version, IMHO, is by Puddle's Pitty Party.

if this thread seems familiar, it's because an alter just bumped it...it's 6 years old, and some of you replied back then

A great song regardless of who sings it but if numbers have any meaning, Pentatonix's version has well over 3.5 million listeners. With no Christmas time line involved.

Fun fact Leonard Cohen actually wrote 80 verses for it. The one you posted is just the version everyone sings and knows.

I certainly cannot explain the lyrics to you, but these are the best two versions, apologies to Buckley.

Explain the Hallelujah lyrics to me

I've been a musician and songwriter for basically all of my adult life.

I've had the privilege of meeting and hanging with some brilliant musicians and songwriters.

Hint: Musicians and songwriters tend to be liars.

When you ask someone the meaning of a song with a somewhat ambiguous meaning, you will get a different answer depending on the day of the week, position of the moon, whether or not that person had a recent bowel movement...
