this! they know how to turn wrenches, run pipe, turn wrenches, and run pipe.
They have no clue about personal finance or saving but they can tell you every spec on their F-250 and the exact date the redesigned one is coming out.
No different than a poor winning the lottery and blowing it all...education is everything.

Can I feel bad for people losing their jobs and still be happy about cheap gas prices? Judging by this thread, I cannot.
Posted on 4/21/16 at 8:22 am to CadesCove
Its a fact, that lower gas prices boost the economy. People travel more and can afford to go on vacation which helps the economy as well as goods are cheaper to ship etc. I don't feel sorry for the oil field workers, they should have chose a job that wouldn't fluctuate so much if they were really worried about it. My wife works with several oil field wives and they would always rub it in on how much money their husbands make, or how big their new house or boat was etc, and now they just poor mouth. One lady's husband instead of making 270K a year went down to 230K a year and they act like they are broke and have to save money. No one likes a person that brags all the time and when they are down they will be kicked, its life it happens to everyone at some point.

I'm fully aware of the economic effects of the O/G industry on Lafayette right now...but does filling up my truck for $34 make me smile? of course!

I had one of my employees tell me how he's going to have to sell his modified "side-by-side" ATV for only $17K which is less than all the money he put into it...while he drives away in his new Chevy high country with lift/tires/etc.
life is tough, but it's tougher if you're stupid

Amen.... This is the "oilfield people" people think of. Which explains the uneducated responses during this tough time.

Let me explain it for the OT. Relatively high income earners lose their jobs or get worried about job loss, they stop spending, consumer spending goes down and we all suffer. Yet you guys are doing the peanut butter and jelly Dance to save a few dollars on gas
You really believe this crap don't you?
Do you not realize that the masses that are saving money on a commodity are putting that saving into the economy more quickly than some oil worker could? Because the money shifted does not mean it disappeared.

So a few less truck nuts are purchased and this hurts me how?

Anecdotal evidence. You find guys in every industry that spend a lot of money. There is an anti fossil fuel bent in America right now. It starts from our president and flows on down. Oil bad, Green good. It's animal farm. And it's disgusting.

Also, wtf do you want us to do. Pay more than the gas station asks for at the pump?
Do I have any control over the price? No....so when it's low I rejoice.
Bitch.
idiot.

Dude, 95% of Americans are better off with cheap gas. Get over it.

The price of a Big Mac is set at the market equalibrim price, not because of what a zit-faced burger flipper is paid.
ETA: How the hell does someone down vote this? If McDonald's can just raise their prices to offset higher wages, then why haven't they already done it? They would have happier employees and still make the same operating profit.
Have you people never seen a demand curve?
The Big Mac is priced based on a couple of things:
1. The aggregate food cost associated with producing the item which includes raw ingredients, labor involved in said item, research and development of said item, and cost of supply chain maintenance for the future raw ingredients
2. The perceived value based on pricing structure for similar items sold by competitors.
That second part is where you can't just randomly jack up the price to cover any and all costs

Spend a lot of time working with O&G people. It's crazy how many have sob stories about how they made so much money but have nothing left because they blew it all.

I've worked in upstream for about a decade and the only people I feel sorry for are recent grads. You need about 3 years experience to get an overseas job and they won't be able to get that. I don't feel sorry for a lot of people in the US bitching because there are still a ton of overseas jobs available. I spent 5 years working in the shittiest places in the world stashing away money like crazy. If I get laid off now I've got enough money saved up to take a couple of years off and go back to grad school and start on a new career, or just live in central or south america until oil picks back up and get back in the mix. I'm still employed in the US, but I would also have no problem going back to africa or the middle east or china to work because the jobs are there for skilled engineers.

Agreed. Especially here in Louisiana.
Doesn't mean these guys shouldn't have planned and saved though, so hopefully they'll learn from it.
