Expat Oil Workers Fall on Hard Times

Let me explain it for the OT. Relatively high income earners lose their jobs or get worried about job loss, they stop spending, consumer spending goes down and we all suffer. Yet you guys are doing the peanut butter and jelly Dance to save a few dollars on gas.

After immigrating to Canada from Venezuela in 2005, petroleum engineer Humberto Romero received three job offers within a month of completing a church-affiliated orientation program. But since getting laid off last April by his longtime employer, he has been unable to find a new job in Canada, and says he can’t go home because of the economic and political crisis there. “I thought I’d get another job in three months, but it’s been nine months and I’ve only had a couple of interviews,” said Mr. Romero, who is 52 years old and married with two teenage children. He was let go from Husky Energy Inc. after a decade with the Calgary-based company. “The competition is really intense for the few jobs available,” he said.

If I work at McDonald's, would you be happy if the price of Big Macs doubled, just so I could keep on living the high life?

You just can't hide class.

Our sales have dropped drastically since the price drop. But, it usually cycles every 4 to 5 years. After the presidential election, things will go back to normal. The big wigs just want to see how much they will have to allocate to taxes.

One day it will be your industry. Have some compassion.

The price of a Big Mac is set at the market equalibrim price, not because of what a zit-faced burger flipper is paid.
ETA: How the hell does someone down vote this? If McDonald's can just raise their prices to offset higher wages, then why haven't they already done it? They would have happier employees and still make the same operating profit.
Have you people never seen a demand curve?

Pretty much every industry falls on hard times.

What part of arse, gas, or grass does class fall under?

Apparently you don't know.

What about compassion applied when gas was 4.00 a gallon on every single citizen of the United states?

I hope the oil industry falls hard on their own inequities.

According to you, the answer is frick 'em.

We save about 300 a month in my household. I love it.

$300='s a golf club membership, or boat payment.

Whew...those were rough times when prices were really high. A family of five...wife and I were each commuting about 30 miles to and from work each day. We had 3 teenagers at the time (two with vehicles). I also paid an assistant per mile. Those gas bills added up.
I definitely don't miss those times.
