Former Slipknot drummer Joey Jordison, one of the founding members of the hard rock band, has died at age 46, his family announced Tuesday (July 27).
"We are heartbroken to share the news that Joey Jordison, prolific drummer, musician and artist passed away peacefully in his sleep on July 26th, 2021," a statement from Jordison's family to Billboard reads. "Joey’s death has left us with empty hearts and feelings of indescribable sorrow. To those that knew Joey, understood his quick wit, his gentle personality, giant heart and his love for all things family and music.
"The family of Joey have asked that friends, fans and media understandably respect our need for privacy and peace at this incredibly difficult time," the statement adds. "The family will hold a private funeral service and asks the media and public to respect their wishes."
Jordison formed Slipknot in his native Iowa in 1995 along with percussionist Shawn Crahan and bassist Paul Gray. Slipknot announced in December 2013 that Jordison and the band were "parting ways" after nearly two decades together, though the drummer later said in interviews that he was fired. "No band meeting? None. Anything from management? No, nothing," Jordison said in a 2016 interview with Metal Hammer. "All I got was a stupid f---ing email saying I was out of the band that I busted my a-- my whole life to f---ing create.”

In 2016, Jordison revealed that his exit from the band coincided with his getting sick with a disease called transverse myelitis and claimed that his bandmates confused his medical issues with a substance abuse problem. “I lost my legs," he said onstage at 2016's Metal Hammer Golden Gods Awards. "I couldn't play anymore. It was a form of multiple sclerosis, which I don't wish on my worst enemy.”
It's unclear from the family statement whether his condition had anything to do with his death.

fricking hate hearing this. That Iowa album was really close to me.

Saw him shred the Tabernacle in 2005 when he was drumming for Ministry. It was unbelievable.

He was an absolute beast.

Can you ever just a look at a kid and think, 'wow, he's going to be a great drummer and a prolific malcontent?'

Something just doesn't add up about this. This seems like such a hard thing to clear up unless they basically wouldn't take his phone calls or something.

I was a huge Slipknot fan in my younger years. They were just such a force recorded, and even more so, live. I saw them I don't know how many times, and it was never a bad show and never got old.
Joey was a big part of the band, particularly getting it off the ground. They helped change metal music and have put together a better, more impactful catalog than most of their contemporaries.
"Wait and Bleed" was the first song of their's I ever heard, and I was hooked after that.

Damn it. That guy one of the best drummers out there. He should’ve finished his career with Slipknot. RIP

It looks like the band knew long before us.
I wonder if we will ever get to see the GB videos.

Yeah, that's what I'm thinking. You don't just get kicked out of a band for getting a disease, unless your band is just full of assholes.
Doesn't really matter anyway. RIP sir.

There was a major blow up between Joey and Corey. Supposedly Joey wanted to move on without Corey because he felt Corey was overshadowing all the other members. Blow up ensues. Blow up leads to the good guy member Paul Grey to try and patch things and gets caught in the crossfire. Paul relapses and dies of an OD. Corey never forgives himself and the bad cuts Joey.

From that picture I assume he couldn't eat and died of starvation.

I have only come to appreciate Slipknot recently.
Sounds like the last few years have been rough on him.

Now, that must be fun. Discovering that band and all their albums at once. The anticipation of waiting on the new albums to drop may have been better, though. Seeing the subsequent tours for the albums was cool, too.

Damn that's sad. First assumption was OD. Poor dude.

I would bet good maybe it was a little from column A and a little (maybe a lot) from column B.
Regardless, if the guy couldn't perform what was the band supposed to do?
