Nevada Highway Patrol pulled over a former Marine named Stephen Lara in February for following a tanker truck “too closely,” and Lara says by the time they were done, they’d robbed him of almost $87,000.

As reported by the Washington Post, the troopers reportedly seized the money after a drug dog “smelled something.” Lara, age 39, showed them documentation proving the cash was his, saying he had it on hand because he doesn’t trust banks. The incident was captured in multiple bodycam videos published by WaPo—one of which, featuring Lara saying the cops are “taking food out of the kids’ mouths,” is embedded above.

“I left there confused. I left there angry,” Lara told the paper. “And I could not believe that I had just been literally robbed on the side of the road by people with badges and guns.”

Lara filed a lawsuit against the Nevada Highway Patrol on Tuesday. On Wednesday—after he’d lawyered up and started speaking to the press—he was informed by email that the DEA will return his money.

Of course you do.

Anyone with any sense should be 100% against civil forfeiture.

maybe but in the end the these types of asset forfeiture is bullshite. shouldnt have to prove im innocent, burden of proof should be on the state not the accused.

Civil asset forfeiture is state-sanctioned robbery.

Assuming everything in the article is 100% correct then frick the HWY patrol. There is a reason a lot of people hate cops and its because of this like this..

But I would like to have more information before I take a side. There could be more to the story that isn't being told.

Why?

Having $87K in cash on you isn't illegal and you shouldn't have to justify it with a reason. Period. No more side needs to be known.

So they admitted to robbing him. Hope he continues his lawsuit.

Yall are missing what I am saying.

If they stopped him, noticed he had $87k on him and took it and that is literally the whole story then frick them. And it wouldn't surprise me if that's how it happened.

And maybe I am giving the cops too much credit to think that maybe there is more to the story. The only thing I am questioning is whether or not it happened exactly like it is told in the article.

I hope he charges them penalties and interest at the same rate the IRS charges US citizens.

After the story got in the news they returned his money.

That should tell you all you need to know.

We (actually) haven't had a good asset forfeiture thread in a while.

That's if they follow through. There's a nasty program where local police can give that money to the Feds and make it far more difficult to get the money returned. Seen cases where jurisdictions have been ordered by courts to return funds and they basically ignore the orders by claiming the Feds have the money and it's out of their hands.

Outside of stupid administrative situations like raiding a drug house and nobody claiming the cash, Civil Assrt Forfeiture is insane.

They took $87k from him on a stop where the only crime he was cited for(if he was even cited for it) was following another car too closely.

The highway patrol admitted to taking his money and admitted they will give it back.

What else could you possibly need to know here that could sway your opinion?

If some a-hole cop took your chair because he "smelled weed" I bet you wouldn't be so ambivalent.
