somewhat irrelevant b/c everyone speeds and this is supposed to be a safety program. speeders aren't even the primary safety concern
cops shouldn't be using disproportionate amount of resources to catch speeders. it's literally just a money-making scheme
LEO should be focused on REAL crimes with victims

Jimmy Rogers aint wrong, baws.

How one ticket could literally bury a person who struggles in poverty to feed their children. They are then forced to choose between paying a ticket or a light bill. Lose your lights or be buried under tickets that continue to pile up until you have no other recourse than to sit in jail or make payments for year.
And just for the record, this is 100% bullshite.
Anyone can go to court and get the most incredible interest free payment plan God has ever gifted this world with.
Judges will take five bucks a month if that’s all they reasonably deem someone can do.
Show up with your iPhone and your nails done, it might be 25 a month.

This is just idiotic. If the citation is something like a tail light then I can kind of see where he’s coming from but part of a police officer’s duties, is to enforce the law and that means writing citations for traffic violations.
Saying that someone is a single parent and therefore shouldn’t be held liable for their actions is ignorant. He’s just trying to deflect.

wrong
LC City Court will detain you if you don't have the fines/CCs in full on your trial date

My favorite mantra! Eliminate crime, make everything legal.

but it's more than just the micro
this is a literal policy and set of procedures enacted for no other reason than revenue extraction from the population
the average American commits three felonies a day. our criminal codes are too immense to avoid criminal activity.

Meh. It’s not like speeding isn’t a dangerous thing worthy of law enforcement attention although some curtailing of the limits, zones etc should be done where needed, especially reduced speed zones for no apparent reason.
Posted on 7/8/18 at 8:31 am to Meauxjeaux
No one is saying that. Don’t be obtuse. Are you legit for speed traps catching people on the way to work for going 75 in a 70?
You think this is a valid use of law enforcement resources, considering the overall violent crime in this state?

All citations issued by Louisiana State Police are handled by the Traffic Courts in the respective parishes via local sheriff's departments.
I am not aware of any parish judicial district that does not offer hardship payment programs.

You don’t think it’s bullshite that he’s coming forward now? If the charges are legitimate- like my 71 in a 55 on the thruway Tuesday- what’s the problem? If they’re making shite up, that’s a whole different story. But he’s a sorry POS for wanting to be a “whistle blower” after he pleads guilty to malfeasance.

It ain't just LC, baw
quote:
The common thread in these cases, and scores more like them, is the jail time wasn't punishment for the crime, but for the failure to pay the increasing fines and fees associated with the criminal justice system.
A yearlong NPR investigation found that the costs of the criminal justice system in the United States are paid increasingly by the defendants and offenders. It's a practice that causes the poor to face harsher treatment than others who commit identical crimes and can afford to pay. Some judges and politicians fear the trend has gone too far.
recent federal ruling out of TN
quote:
It's unconstitutional for the state of Tennessee to continue revoking driver's licenses from people who can't pay court costs, a federal judge determined Monday.
The ruling from U.S. District Judge Aleta Trauger will have broad national and state ramifications, said Claudia Wilner, a senior attorney with the National Center for Law and Economic Justice in New York City who worked on the case.
story out of Nola
quote:
The letter says the fees are illegal when imposed on indigent defendants, who account for the vast majority of convictions in New Orleans.
Thousands and perhaps tens of thousands of defendants may have been subject to the illegal fees, Kristen Clarke, the president and executive director of the lawyers group, said in a statement. She asked the judges to stop imposing the fees immediately.
DOJ Warning
quote:
The Justice Department is asking local courts across the country to be wary of how they slap poor defendants with fines and fees to fill their jurisdictions’ coffers, warning that such practices often run afoul of the U.S. Constitution and have serious real-world consequences.
In a letter that will be sent Monday morning to the chief judges and court administrators in all 50 states, Vanita Gupta, the head of the department’s Civil Rights Division, and Lisa Foster, director of the Office for Access to Justice, wrote that illegal enforcement of fines and fees had been receiving increased attention in recent years, and the Justice Department had a “strong interest” in making sure the rights of citizens were protected.

I’m not arguing that there are too many laws on the books and many need to be eliminated. The argument is where do you stop?
And if this is the path this thread is going, why are we fusding at Police in this thread when we should be fussing at the legislators?

they aren't doing this for safety. they're literally doing it to take our money. no other reason.
