I promise you that any human that shoots heroin three times per day for twenty straight days will be sick as frick on day twenty-one if they don't have any heroin. There really is a huge difference between a crack head and lots of typical opiate addicts. Crack heads want to get really high while most opiate addicts take opioids just to keep from being sick. He raises a good point but it is way more complicated than his simple thought experiment.

I wonder why, surely it isn't from the premise laid out in the OP

sure, after a while if they have decided they didn't want to do drugs anymore.
Still not disproving what the guy is saying. You're just missing the point.

I agree much of the issue with addicts is their own boredom and unhappiness in life. Most real addicts have nothing else going on in their lives. Of course not all of them are this way as many successful people also get addicted.

Can you just not read it then? Don't be an attention whore and let everyone know you are not reading it.

This is bogus.
Miles Davis had money, music, loads of hot chicks, living a creative, fulfilled life and was still addicted to heroin.
Rush Limbaugh was prescribed opioids for a bad back got hooked and lost his hearing while having millions, loads of fans and plenty of hot action from Codename Jaguar from a Compuserve chat room.
Darryl Strawberry.
Elvis.
People with lots of stuff going on might not get involved in drugs frequently enough to develop a habit but drugs are still addictive.
Who is this Ted Talk jabroni?

y, everything we are doing to stem the tide of drug addiction is from the wrong angle. So what do we do here in the USA? We continue doing the same thing, beating our head against a wall, fighting the druggies and addicts as if they are the great enemy.
Because thats what your guy is saying. Its their fault not others.

you don't think all these people were trying to fill a void?
also, how about all the people that aren't celebrities that this is actually talking about?

And if what we believe about addiction is right -- those people are exposed to all those chemical hooks -- What should happen? They should become addicts. This has been studied really carefully. It doesn't happen; you will have noticed if your grandmother had a hip replacement, she didn't come out as a junkie.
This is a dumb fricking comparison. First off, tons of people who were injured and given opioids from a doctor DO become junkies.
If they dont, it's probably due to the fact that they were titrated off of the painkillers by a responsible doctor.

I've done my fair share coke in my life and I've never felt an addiction coming on. Probably cause everything is cut up and overpriced these days. I've never fricked with heroine though.

I’ve had the diamorphine at a hospital a few times. It is utterly glorious and righteous.
They should probably do something to control that shite.

You're confusing materialism with fulfillment. A lot of wealthy, powerful people lead empty lives.

One rich man in ten
With a satisfied mind
