my grandparents who lived on a farm in rural east texas used to talk about this. they described it as a ball of fire traveling through the woods. i am near 70 now and never saw it. i ran across this video today. LINK i wonder if this is even real or if this was what they called foxfire.

It's actually a fungi

quote:

Foxfire, also called fairy fire and chimpanzee fire,[1] is the bioluminescence created by some species of fungi present in decaying wood. The bluish-green glow is attributed to a luciferase, an oxidative enzyme, which emits light as it reacts with a luciferin. The phenomenon has been known since ancient times, with its source determined in 1823

This is the only foxfire I remember. It was a series of books about Appalachian life published in the 1970's by a group of students at a school in north Georgia. My parents had a set when I was a kid. Guess the name comes from what you're talking about.

yes

ETA: I read as a kid about ball lightning that passed through an airplane

that's a static discharge, I've had one of those, it will definitely get your attention, foxfire has a different meaning though

Yes. My dyslexic buddy used it. It’s his favorite web browser

I saw some glowing rotten wood as a kid but not really that bright and did not move like the video.

There were tales of a green light glowing in the distance in a town up in Arkansas. I never went.

Spook light

My older brother had that collection. Very interesting books about Appalachian life. Hog killing to medicine.

Yep, we made the pilgrimage while at LA TECH to go see it. Not sure if it was the alcohol, but we saw something.

Nah, our local spooky spot was Swan Lake Rd (JuJu Rd.)

We heard and saw all kinds of (probably imagined) stuff out there.

Yeah, I spent a lot of time looking through those books as a kid. They had all sorts of useful stuff in them. Basically a survival guide.
