Ever had a shop sell you a bag of totally dead crawfish?

I've had this happen to me twice now in the past few years. Once at rouses (should have known better). Most recently at Jeager's. Both times I was patronised, telling me that I don't know how crawfish work and that they're just in shock from being too cold.
Now, I've been doing this my entire adult life. Like 15 years. yeah I get that if they're kept on ice they can get a little sluggish. But you can jinya generally wake them up with a little tussle. these things are not that case. You pick them up by the tail and they literally flop over on their back, claws dangling. I brought them back for a refund both times. Why would I pay you money for maybe alive crawfish. If spraying them down wakes them all up, then why not do that before selling them to me?
Is that unreasonable? What would you have done? I'm open to being reeducated if so

Only dead crawfish I'm cool with purchasing are those that have been dropped into extremely hot crab boil water.

I've never had this happen.

I would've gone full Karen and demanded my money back.

The lesson here is to buy straight from the farmer even it means going out your way. Or going to trusted locations.

I had it once before and I turned around and brought the sack back. They bitched but they gave me a new sack.

got some from hole in da wall in Port Vincent and they were fricking incredible. Ol Jacob Landry "choot em jacob" loaded them in my truck himself.

Lol
To have a Rouses employee tell you this

we handled hundreds of sacks every week and ive never seen an entire sack of dead. like you, id be back i there to show them and explain etc. 15% dead loss is an accepted industry standard, however we hardly ever see that. did the sack stink? it had to have been a carry over from the prior week if i had to guess. either way, it sure sucks

When I was a kid my dad was boiling two sacks. We dumped the first sack and half the crawfish were crushed or dead. We picked them out and brought them back to the place we bought them. Owner apologized and gave us a replacement sack for free for the hassle.
I miss when this was the way businesses worked. Mistakes happen. Make it right and move on.

All the time.
Cheapest I ever got was $1 a pound at a casino. They were spiced good, but little small.

I’ve bought live from Rouses two or three times and had minimal dead. It surprises me you had a whole sack of dead from anywhere. I’ve been buying crawfish for 30+ years and I’ve never experienced that.
Side story, I was 13 for my first solo boil. Went with my mom to get them. Got everything ready, cleaned the crawfish, fine tuned the seasoning then boiled them. After I let them soak then drain we poured them on the table. Everyone sat down to start digging in when we noticed these little ball looking things everywhere. Almost like bb’s. Hundreds of them. Started investigating the actual crawfish and noticed many of the crawfish had these little clusters of ball under their tail. My mom freaked. Thought something was wrong with so she had us bag them all up and toss em. I called the guy we bought them from and lit into him. He explained to me that it was crawfish roe. I felt like an idiot digging that garbage bag of crawfish out the trash but they were delicious.

Never all dead.
I've only had to return a sack once and I'd have to say they were 30% dead.
The shop swapped them without any grief. His explanation was that they were likely crushed.

Bought a sack at LA Boilers on Perkins last year - at least 50% dead. Called, manager asked me if I could bring them and show him. I did, he apologized and gave me 2 sacks as a goodwill gesture.
Lifetime customer now - take care of me, I'll return the favor.
ETA: Manager looked at tag on the bag, night shift had failed to rotate bags, so he admitted to me they were 2 days old.

I've had a bad sack from Rouses's as well. Alexander's on the other hand has been pretty great for Crawfish and I've ordered from them numerous times.

You were trying to do unnatural things with them, weren't you?
