It’s not an actual self sustaining reactor. Getting enough of the highly fissile material in high enough concentrations has always been the bottleneck in nuclear science.
Standard radioactive stuff is common and easily obtained.
Probably has a pile of radioactive material that is at most stimulated to higher activity with a neutron gun
