Will probably never see contraflow again in this state.

Just wait till a couple of hours prior to landfall and then depart.
Roads are usually clear since many took off earlier and were stuck in traffic.
By that time, you will better know the path of the storm and which direction will be best to travel towards.

From the coast what is the best direction to travel to avoid traffic during evacuations before a hurricane?
Everyone knows that storms weaken as you move higher.
Ever see a hurricane-damaged satellite?

A lot depends on your location along the coast, the current location of the storm, and its projected path (to east or west of you). Ideally you want to remain on the western side of the landfall spot.
If you are on the east side of the storm, you need to remain quite a distance from the center's projected landfall area given you will be on the 'dirty' side (usually more rain and tornados). If so, you should evacuate west beyond the storm's landfall spot (less rain, tornados, and usually winds drop off much quicker than on east of center). If you will be on the west side of the storm, but near its landfall area, you need to remain thirty to fifty miles west of the projected landfall area.
Bear in mind, it is not uncommon for the projected landfall spot of the storm to easily shift ten to thirty miles east or west within eight hours of landfall (or less). In short, probably the best direction to evacuate is to go north. Get away from the coast and potential flooding from rains and storm surge. Plan ahead. Be prepared! Most people who die from hurricanes are as a result of flooding.

Leave five days out is the most only way to avoid traffic.

you'll need to have a good idea of the final (most likely) landfall @ ~12-24 hours, and forecast direction as it makes landfall. (youll need to find and book a place far away with free cancellations in advance)
For Ida, I had a relative leave at 300 am from Raceland as the outer bands were at the coast and went to stay with friends in Alabama, didnt hit any traffic at all and were making just North of Mobile right after daybreak. If you dont want to deal with traffic, leave really early or last minute in the middle of the night

When you get to the fork in the road, take it.
