Meh....as long as it's being done by countries not named North Korea and Iran, does it really matter who does it first?

Watching Interstellar made me even more pissed at Obama and other Presidents who have essentially stripped the US of funding space exploration. We need to be exploring the next frontier.

Now we can't even take our own astronauts to the space station that the US largely funded and built.

We shifted our R&D goals on creating material to build things in space as well as a massive undertaking in robotics. This is not a problem because less advanced countries need to catch up so all humans can appreciate space. So we farm out our 70 year old technology and stay on the cutting edge forefront of technological advancement.

I have no problems with either of those.

Apparently they may try to reshoot the anchors.

This pic was taken when it was about two miles from landing on the comet:

Nolan has stated that was one of his motives in making this movie.

He feels that the space exploration drive has dwindled and is dangerously close to dying.

Sorry if already discussed but how big is that comet (I guess in diameter) and how far out does its orbit go? I would imagine as long as they keep communicating with this thing they will ride the orbit and keep collecting data

IIRC it is about 2.5 miles in diameter, and the mission is:
quote:

The plan is that Rosetta and Philae will accompany the comet as it hurtles toward the sun and becomes increasingly active as it heats up. Using 21 different instruments, they will collect data that scientists hope will help explain the origins of comets and other celestial bodies.

NASA was considered a huge waste of money by republicans and I've heard them bitching about it for years. Now that a democrat is in the White House suddenly NASA was a treasure that deserves funding.

Have some goddamn principles.

A white shining comet that stands out against the dark, blackness of space.

I'm shocked, you racist.

Where is Rosetta [interactive]

Slide through the time bar and see the 10 year journey. That's some good math to prepare a trip like that including four gravity assists, visiting Earth 3 times and Mars once on the way. This is 3D by the way so you can Zoom and pan around, pretty neat.

Both parties screwed NASA. Obama appointed Bolden, whom not many are a fan of, which doesn't help come appropriations time.

Blame really every president since Nixon. The space program has been a joke since 1973. The shuttles that we launched people into orbit on were less sophisticated than the Saturn rockets we sent to the Moon. If say the Challenger incident happened on one of those rockets, then it's very feasible that they could have survived in the Saturn when they didn't on the shuttles.

Seriously, go to the Space and Rocket Center, and prepare to be embarrassed. It's really just a shrine to the kate 50s to early 70s. It's embarrassing that we haven't done anything as impressive as what we did in 1969, nearly 50 years later.

Huntsville Space and Rocket Center is a testament to what the space program WAS. It's a shame that we've let it get to where it is today. No reason we shouldn't be on the moon and Mars already.

The Shuttle was a multi-functional vehicle that accomplished multiple, successful agency, defense, and commercial operations. It also allowed us to carry signifiacant payloads and personnel to the ISS.

To not appreciate the signifiacant impact the Shuttle had on America's complete domination of space in the 1980-2010 timeframe is not understand history.
