I'm going to be in NOLA this weekend and staying near the garden district. I've heard that there are closures of businesses so what areas would be good to go to for dining and cocktails.

any hotel. I have heard plenty of BBQs go on in the rooms.

NOFD have been called out to quite a few smoke related in room BBQs

I've heard this rumor for years. Is any of that really true?

Like clockwork. They come out of the woods for this thread.

OP, some restaurants close for this week, but most will be open.
If you have specific suggestions for places to eat or bars, go ask the fine folks on the food and drink board.
And yes, it's safe to go to the quarter too. This isn't a bad weekend at all.

It's happened in years past for the bayou classic. Not on the level that gets reported over and over by uncle ted and his friends from the plant.

Anywhere that doesn't care about getting tips because all the good places close. Also watch out for all the people bbqing and trashing the sidewalks. You should probably just go ahead and cancel your trip and reschedule a better weekend.

Am I doing it right?

I think Bayou Classic is when you have to worry about these type of shenanigans. Essence fest is a much more professional crowd. At least in my experience.

LOL

Everyone should remain calm and stay in their subdivisions.

New Orleans restaurants closing for a week or two in July predates Essence Fest by many years. That's when restaurant employees take their vacations.
