Esquire sparked a heated debate on social media Tuesday when it unveiled an upcoming cover story about a white American boy and what’s it’s like to grow up “in the era of social media, school shooting, toxic masculinity, #MeToo, and a divided country.”

The March issue has angered critics who feel that documenting the experiences of a 17-year-old boy is unnecessary, while others are outraged over the outrage. The story quickly became a trending topic on Twitter as detractors rushed to mock the magazine for, as Out Magazine’s deputy editor put it, “radicalizing white mediocrity for the clicks."

Former ESPN host Jemele Hill sarcastically tweeted an image of the cover captioned, “Because you know what we don’t discuss nearly enough? The white male experience.”

Imagine being that kid doing a photoshoot and having no idea what the story his face will be on is about.

I honestly don't know who is supposed to be outraged or what they're supposed to be outraged about here.

I like how he has a picture of Clay Matthews in the background as if they had to add an extra layer of whiteness

There is a substantial and loud group of people who want to destroy white men and subsequently white women. The fact that a magazine is being vilified for one article about the middle class white male experience - no matter its content - proves it.

As Janice Fiamengo recently said, if there’s such a thing as toxic masculinity, we need to talk more about “tonic masculinity”, the tendency of males to perform heroic, dirty, difficult, and/or highly technical jobs that so greatly enhance our society.

There also needs to be an acknowledgement of “intoxicating masculinity” which is still a real source of happiness for the vast majority of heterosexual females and homosexual males.

She meant that sarcastically, but it’s actually quite true. The narcissistic navel gazing of the “oppressed groups” is all anyone in the media and entertainment industry can talk about besides Orange Man Bad.

No, it isn't a substantial amount. It's just those who cry the loudest. Nothing more, nothing less.

Twitter is very useful in my line of work. However I have to be very, very careful about who I follow. The moment one of the cybersecurity folks I follow starts getting political, I drop them.

I follow people for their cybersecurity knowledge and opinions, not their political views. Thankfully I've only had to drop a few people in the past several years.
