The consumer credit reporting company said its security teams are looking into another possible breach barely one month after it disclosed a hack that left exposed the personal information of 145.5 million people.

Not surprising anymore. For any company.

It's a not a matter of if your credit file or personal information will get hacked. It's when it will get hacked.

That's why I applied a credit freeze for my wife and me with all three credit bureaus.

Better to take 10 minutes out of my day to enter my PIN to remove the credit freeze than to spend hours and hours trying to clean up identity theft.

Explain how to do this b/c I'm interested in doing this for my wife and I. Who do I call? What are the steps I must take?

I typed a fake last name and 6 random digits for the social security number under Equifax's "Am I Impacted?" search and this was my results

Place a Security Freeze on Credit Reports

A security freeze protects against identity theft and the opening of fraudulent accounts with a consumer’s personal information. It will block an institution or lender from accessing a report, unless a pre-set PIN is provided to “thaw” the report; a credit report may be thawed at a particular bureau for a period of time or for a specific lender. Consumers must contact each of the bureaus listed below to place a security freeze.

Note: Each of the credit bureaus will give or allow you to create a PIN to be used to thaw or unfreeze your report in the future. It is very important you do not lose or forget this PIN! It is recommended to store it in multiple locations with other important documents, including a safe deposit box or home lockbox, or in a password-protected format electronically.

Go to each of the following sites to place a security freeze and follow the instructions; record and protect the PIN:

• • Equifax: LINK
• • Experian: LINK
• • Innovis: LINK
• • TransUnion: LINK

Some states charge fees to place a freeze, thaw or unfreeze a credit report; see the sites above for specific state details.

I did this too but never did get a PIN number from Equifax, I just got an error message. I have since checked to see if my request for a freeze did in fact go through and it did. Thing is without a pin how am I going to unfreeze it? fricking turds!

Well , I will gladly let any hacker steal my credit. It's so bad they could only make it go higher.

Equifax should be discredited and disbanded, but instead were just awarded a huge security contract from the IRS.

I’ve been trying to file a dispute for a matter that doesn't involve the security breach, and equifax won’t let me

Nope.

Freeze has to be done at each.

Fraud alert done with one must be shared with the others.
