Did a quick search - EPA fuel mileage for a Prius is 50+ MPG highway, a tad higher for city. Other small hybrids fall in this range but they are outliers compared to cars with traditional power trains.

At some point, there are only so many BTU's of energy in a gallon of gas, and a theoretical limit on engine efficiency. Something will have to give - car size, power, etc.

Welcome to the 1970's all over again.

Can someone legitimately explain to me how South Louisiana is supposed to evacuate for a hurricane in an EV? Do we all stop in Jackson, get shot, robbed and charge up for a couple hours and then resume?

You don't evacuate. You use your prius to power your house.

So, to recap: These moving targets have been imposed and walked back dramatically with alternating administrations; the numbers they purport to achieve don’t have any basis in reality and manufacturers aren’t meeting them anyway; and today’s buyers are choosing the heavier, thirstier, less-efficient options in every fleet. 52 MPG in five years is a nice dream. If history is any indication, that’s all it will ever be.

A 7 page outrage thread based on virtually nothing. Lmao.

it will never happen. They set such a bullshite mark of 52 mpg to force us into electric. It’s completely insane to think 52 average is possible in 5 years time

frick these retards

I swear if it was 1960 y'all would be against going to the moon. This is some heavy pandering. It will get pushed/changed after midterms. The auto industry will direct the politicians as they always do. I'd love a F-250 that can get 45mpg. The actual number including stop and go is 36mpg if you read the article.

Nobody thought commercial space trips were going to be a thing now they are booked solid. I ha e no problem incentivizing technological advancements. It's way better than trillions spent on wars and giving passes to Saudi Arabia.

America needs to lead the world in all aspects of capital. That includes infrastructure, and industrial. If we gonna spend trillions let's at least set goals instead of mailing EBT cards.

Why stop at 52?
Why not some other unrealistic number such as 352?

You can already anticipate the whining for new taxes since the gas taxes fall as MPG goes up.

Yep. This has already started. The new infrastructure bill has a provision to study the implementation of a mileage tax. Thanks, Buyden.

Car manufacturers are pulling every trick they can find to up fuel economy - engine shutdown, electric steering, 8,10 speed transmissions, CVT's, variable rate battery charging, plastic body parts, etc. All to get those last hundredths of a gallon in gas mileage.

The tradeoff is more complex cars that cost more to maintain. Of course maintenance cost is not a metric the EPA cares about.

Not sure if serious. Some of the granola crowd probably think this is a legit possibility.

Tell that to someone in Lake Charles who didn’t have power for weeks. Or In several areas where it’s not safe to harbor in place. Power is an inconvenience. Safety isn’t.
