Enviro groups move to block power supply for Meta’s planned Louisiana AI data center

Two environmental groups have filed motions to block a utility connection for Meta's proposed 2GW artificial intelligence data center in Louisiana.
The motions filed by the Alliance for Affordable Energy and the Union of Concerned Scientists with the Louisiana Public Service Commission (PSC) are attempting to block US utility Entergy from building three gas power plants to serve the data center.
quote:
Pending regulatory approval, the new generators are expected to come online between 2028 and 2029.
In the motion, as reported by Kpel965, the groups contend that Entergy did not follow the correct procedure when proposing the new gas-fired plants, which could result in significant costs for ratepayers.
quote:
Meta has offered to offset most of the costs for Entergy's customers, with the company set to pay the full annual revenue for the plants for 15 years. The groups contend that Entergy did not offer the most cost-effective option for ratepayers.
As part of the agreement, Entergy received an exemption from regulators to build the new power plants to directly serve the data center. However, the groups claim that Entergy's plan does not qualify for an exemption, and they are asking an administrative judge and the PSC to review it.
quote:
If the gas power plants are delayed, this could ultimately impact Meta’s timeline and lead to much longer lead times for the data center to achieve energization.

Meta will not help this state.
Only people winning here are greedy Louisiana politicians.
I say block them out. Any promise of positives won't come to fruition.

This is the best chance for a real economic advancement for Louisiana in my lifetime. Data centers aren’t going anywhere, and Louisiana has the attributes to be an actual player. If nothing else, it brings billions of commercial spending and taxable receipts into the state.

Does anyone know what kind of tax breaks and help from the state Meta is getting for building this center and the infrastructure for it?

I don’t trust either side here or the judges so who knows?

They're basically suing to say that Entergy didn't prove that gas turbine generators are the more cost-effective option - unless they plan to build a coal plan there isnt a more cost effective option than gas turbines, its a dumb arse suite that hopefully gets tossed.

Time for Elon‘s geniuses to get to work. Who is funding these two left-wing lunatic organizations? Why do I have a very bad feeling that it’s the taxpayers.

They need to be building a new nuclear plant. Riverbend is getting old.

Data centers produce less jobs than a gas station, and most of the revenue is state tax exempt due to blatant corruption.
Hope this shite fails, yet another scam to funnel money to globalists

500 direct jobs. 1,000 indirect jobs. 5,000 construction jobs for 7-8 years. That's one big arse gas station..

I wonder if they're livestreaming the protest via Facebook.

500 direct jobs
You believe that? Lmao
There’s no office there, and no huge parking garage. Where are the people?
Answer: 500 jobs ELSEWHERE
That’s the fine print. None if that job money comes here, it’s all at an office building elsewhere. There might be a dozen techs on site to keep it running, that’s it.

SMRs it is

I agree but we are probably at a minimum 5-10 years out on a true nuclear buildout. SMRs are the new thing and have a ton of potential but need time to standardize abd construct. That will take a while.
Gas is the cheapest energy we have outside of coal right now. But with how far behind we are with China on building new power stations it wouldn’t surprise me to eventually see a tech company stand their ground a build a new coal generator for it’s reliability and cheap cost. Coal plants can also store months worth of fuel on-site. Modern scrubber systems have cleaned up their emissions significantly.
But can’t be having any of that “cheap” and “reliable” energy for our state.
