The concept of a word as simple as “defund” as well as the role political leanings play in this situation.

I can tell you have never created a budget. A city must create a budget. As such, they have to allocate resources. The city of Goodhue is no longer allocating enough resources to law enforcement.

I think it is you that is getting too literally hung up on the prefix "DE".

Your feelings got hurt because someone made the leap from a police force quitting to the left's "defund the police" rhetoric.

Wait, now you weren’t part of that leap? Now my feelings are double hurt.

Thanks for the civics lesson. As an attorney and former lobbyist I had no idea that cities created budgets.

Based on the intellect you’ve exhibited in this thread your thoughts aren’t worth much.

Me too. Higher salary is a great motivator to make “current” into “former”

The mayor said the mass resignations were surprising because the council gave officers a 5% increase and Smith a $13,000 raise earlier this year.

Goodhue Police Department consisted of the Chief, one full time officer and five part time officers.

Surprised they had that many. Population of the town is only 1100.

The county should be able to cover it without issue. It's not like there are a bunch of gangbangers in town.

*Red Wing is close by. Probably the town/city they are referencing for pay.

Not across the river in my part of WI. Local cops here start at around $22...

The smaller towns/cities have a lot of turnover as fresh out of community college guys get to play cop for a few years getting experience before moving to a bigger town/city for higher pay.

by not "funding" they are in essence "de-funding". it's a distinction without a difference

Holy shite. Way to derail the thread with this kind of stupid.

If surrounding police forces are paying $30.00 per hour and the city of Goodhue is paying nearly 1/3 less, they are not properly funding their law enforcement officers.

Did you ever consider that maybe a town of 1100 people can't afford to pay multiple cops $30/hour?

The City Council met to discuss options for police coverage after the department’s resignation. The meeting was initially called so the city could discuss salary increases for the department, but the entire team resigned before it could happen.
also, they apparently quit just before a meeting to discuss an additional raise

I wouldn’t be surprised if this is more of a personal dispute between the chief and mayor/“city” council

I am considering the statement by the police chief.

They always have. The sheriff is called on when a crime occurs. These local police don’t do much more than write tickets. They don’t have detectives; they aren’t solving crimes.

The funding isn’t just about salary. They want new “lifesaving” equipment (aka military toys). The city will be fine without them. If these officers are worth more, let them go work for a neighboring town.

What are your thoughts on the statements from the WGA regarding a request for higher wages?

Pay them more than anywhere in the area. It's a tough job that doesn't pay well, yet people are surprised at the results.

No, you figured you had chance to make a statement about defunding the poleeeece and are just going down in flames the last couple pages because you won't take the L.

Typical. The locals around here love to pull out their armored car for parades and events. Only times it's ever been used as far as I know.

fricking disgusts me, and a lot of others as well, but they are oblivious.

Recruitment and retaining officers, dispatchers, EMS etc is a problem at almost every department in the country at the moment.

Three major factors are contributing to it low pay, high stress and negative public sentiment.

Baton Rouge is offering 10K sign on bonuses and can’t get enough qualified applicants to fill an academy class.

Many veteran guys are retiring or leaving for other occupations which further puts strains on departments . The worst is yet to come.
