What is an advanced meter?
quote:
Entergy Louisiana is about to roll out a new digital, advanced metering and communications system. The new meters are "advanced" because they record usage in 15-minute increments and can send the usage to us via a new secure wireless communication network without the need for a meter reader.
quote:
Is there a cost for the meter?
quote:
Beginning in January 2019, your bill will include a small amount to recover the costs we incur in preparation for upgrading to the advanced metering infrastructure, including the communication system. In addition, the savings in our operational costs will be used to offset some of the new system costs. Over time, we believe the potential benefits will far outweigh the overall costs of meter deployment. We will be providing you with new optional programs and services that help put more control in your hands to better manage and reduce your monthly electric usage.
But what if you don't want the new advanced meter? No problem, except for:
quote:
The choice is 100% up to you if you are a residential customer. If you do not want an advanced meter, you will have the opportunity to "opt out" of receiving your meter upgrade. Customers who choose to "opt out" will incur an additional monthly fee of $14.35, as approved by the Louisiana Public Service Commission. The fee is intended to pay the costs associated with the operation and maintenance of additional infrastructure and manual processes that are required to serve opt-out customers and read the meter manually each month.
The one advantage that comes to mind for a state that is right next door to LA and west of us is that at least they have multiple choices on who they would like to use for their utiliies provider (cable, internet, electrical, etc.). Competition is a good thing. Choice is a good thing. Forcing this shite down someone's throat with no other alternative solution at all is a bad thing, but unfortunately par for Louisiana and the politics here.

how great is that

It's fluff. Name the programs. Name the benefits. A packaged pile of shite being branded as beneficial to the end-user.
Whoopty-doo.
Whoopty-doo.

This has been happening for over a year and you’re just now pitching your fit?

This is so true. It’s ridiculous the little competition entergy has here.

Just being rolled out in my area. Wasn't aware prior to receiving an e-mail or two over the last 2 months.

Pretty easy:
Turn the damn lights off
Don't set your AC on 70 in the middle of the afternoon in July

Didn’t they just do this a few years ago? My old ladies on Nextdoor were in a panic.

So if you upgrade they'll charge you for the increased cost of the upgrade. If you opt out of upgrading they'll charge you for the increased cost of deploying someone to check your meter.
But what do they do with the savings for upgrading the meters and having to deploy less people to check meters?

Entergy is a terrible company. I'm glad I have DEMCO.

When will we be finished paying for storm damages during Katrina, Rita and Gustav
Posted on 4/15/20 at 9:34 am to Will Cover
All that means is they have a new way to make you pay more per month. You will still be using the same amount of energy its just going to cost you more.

The irony is you're paying for some motherfricker to not check shite. I wonder how many people checking meters actual check them.

The whole point of these things are to eliminate manual meter readers thereby reducing their labor cost.

Technology and prick politicians will kill this country.
Fire a bunch of meter readers. Replace them with a new “advanced meter” and charge you , the customer, to replace them. Then if you don’t want to pay THEM to replace THEIR equipment, then some a-hole politician will pass a law saying you can just pay an additional $15 a month to opt out.
Then as already mentioned, the cherry on top is the lack of competition. “Life ain’t fair” if you’re a parent, you may want to start telling your kids that twice an hour every hour. Talk about getting fricked.
Edit: this pissed me off so bad when it first came out and now I see it again. Tax payer funded infrastructure for a private companies improved profits. If they want to reduce labor costs, then they should have ponied up the money themselves in phases. frick them cocksuckers

Link? Most studies show deregulation of energy increases costs

My smart meter from Entergy was installed months ago. It's no big deal.
Now we don't have the Entergy meter reader guy going to the back of our house every month to read the meter.

True but nothing to do with your issue. While you buy the actual commodity (electricity) from other companies you still pay CenterPoint (in Houston) all the fees for distribution and metering that you are, rightfully, complaining about.
Pretty sure there wasn’t an extra charge when CenterPoint went to smart metering , because they were just going to offset the cost by laying off the people who manually read the meters

TL;DR - "Hi, we're going to charge you more money to cover the cost of having this fancy, new cost-saving meter. If you want to just keep your old meter then we will charge you for keeping it. Either way we've found a new way to increase your bill. Thanks for being an Entergy suc... err.. customer!"
