Then basic economics would dictate you increase your pay to become competitive, unless the upgrade of quality wouldn't result in enough profits to stay afloat.

Civils generally don't do all that great without getting a PE certification but there are exceptions. I'm not sure why the entry jobs start lower than others. It's still a good living.

I'm looking online and it seems that the only kind of online engineering programs are electrical engineering and industrial engineering.

I believe Arizona state has several online engineering bachelor programs.
I couldn't imagine trying that. It's tough.

amen. maybe it is because our profession is generally predicated on optimizing and squeezing dollars out of every design that we also are tightwads and wont pay for quality or loyalty.
it could be just me, but i notice other professions are far more proactive at retaining quality employees and ensuring organic growth. consulting engineering is terrible. i work in a 100 person office where maybe 15-20% of the people have been with the company >5 years. why? everyone knows the best (and often only) way to get a raise or promotion is to jump ship, even if they have a desire to stay with their current organization and coworkers. pretty pathetic.
i would love to give a few of my underlings a raise, pm training, etc.; but, i can't get a superior to sign off on any of it. the shortage will come when the babyboomers are retiring in large numbers. they will have left the cupboards empty in a sense since they have continually pushed off or shirked duties to train the next generation of people to run the company. we have a void of mid-level engineers in the 30-45 year old age range.

Civil is usually towards the bottom in terms of average starting salaries.
I, personally, am trying to finish up a Ph.D. in chemical engineering and plan to do R&D for one of the major oil companies, or get a post doc and teach.
With an undergrad degree a lot of students get positions in the energy sector, a lot of students go on to medical school, and pharma companies are starting to hire a lot more ChemEs to take production from batch process to continuous ones. Ultimately, ChemEs are glorified MechEs with a better grasp of chemistry and how to design plants and systems that have to deal with reactions and separations.

I had to GTFO of the office. That place was driving me crazy when we slowed down. They have not laid any engineers off yet but the constant worry over my utilization was killing me.
I went to a large project, and am now running it and received a substantial raise. It really helped that I have good people skills.
The way I see it today - If I can complete this project successfully I am set with with work for the rest of my life.

There is nothing wrong with asking other people their opinions about a topic.
And I really do not see how it matters if I go to another school to pursue engineering. If I prefer to learn at Southern University, then I have a right to pursue my goals there.
I think your just upset at the fact that SU graduates can get jobs just as well as LaTech graduates. In all honesty it does not matter.
