I've lurked on O-T for a little while...now I need some advice...
Where's the money: engineering design or construction? I've worked in civil design for a while but often kick around the idea of giving the construction/PM side a shot. Any of y'all done that? How'd you like the switch? Thanks in advance!

Engineering, then open a construction business as a side gig.

Engineering..... more options and you can still do construction if you want

you'll make plenty in either if you are good.

You need to go back to Engineering school and fail out then enroll as a CM major.
And that’s coming from a CM guy

I read this as you have a civil degree, currently do design work and are contemplating getting into the construction side of civil projects. I did this and it worked out great for me. No longer in that industry but I’d recommend trying it. Even if you end up wanting to go back in design after a while...you’ll be a better engineer.

I was in engineering and switched to CM. Not because I failed any classes or it was too hard, but because I could see that I wouldn't enjoy my time in college if I stayed in engineering.
Several years later... No ragrets

GulfCoastPoke is right. As one who has been on the CM side, I feel like 2-3 years in the construction field should be a prerequisite for engineers and architects to get their license. I can't tell you how many times I have seen a design that looks great on paper but can't actually be built.

I can relate!

Currently a Civil Eng. major with a minor in CM

They pay you more in CM, but there is a reason. After you pull a few 12 hour 7 day shifts, you'll know why. But I loved it when I was doing it. Weekends were so chill.

My CM degree has paid off big time, but I did spend 6 summers on my tools then after graduation went to an engineering firm then hired on by the client. Loving it and money is there

I see this way more than I should, I agree that engineers should have to work in the field before getting licensed
