I don’t look forward to the empty nester time. I lift weights and walk the dog but the rest of my hobbies /interests are vices which doesn’t sound like a recipe for success as one ages.
I think it’s hard to replace the structure and purpose that raising a family brings a man (as a side topic, I think our society devaluing fathers has led to a lot of problems for everyone because of this truth).
I’ve heard from several retired folks that grandkids are awesome and fit the gap.
Getting into cooking sounds like a decent plan (as good as anything else). If you don’t have a dog, that’s worth a shot too.
I think it’s probably important to connect with other men you like too (regardless of the hobby) but that’s not always easy.
Good luck. I’ll be in the same boat soon enough and don’t have a lot of answers. I might just end up being that old guy in the office everyone wonders why he doesn’t retire.

I have no hobbies but raising my kids has been super rewarding.
I have a dog that is basically replacing me having infants…..we both love her exponentially.
I love my kids and I love my dog and I know I still need something to occupy free time.
I have always wanted to restore and actually USE a jukebox….

Caring for the elderly of my family. You could donate some time to charitable causes like delivering meals.
Played golf when I was young but not for 20 years and considering taking that back up, but surely would be disappointed that I wouldn't hit it as far now. Delve down YouTube rabbit holes for new music.

I built and maintain a motocross track on my land for the grandkids.
And I travel across the country catching snakes, playing with the venomous ones, and posting them on instagram. Heading to Arizona in a few weeks.

Yeah, I second welding. If I had the time, I’d really learn to TIG and weld aluminum.

I have a small covered outside area with a rubber floor covering, weight bench, kettlebell, TV, stereo.
A 25lb Kettlebell will get you going, you can look on youtube for exercises, I do 6 different ones 4 sets of 8-10.
It's amazing how good you feel after an hour workout and how well you sleep.

All of these posts and I don't remember seeing anybody suggesting learning how to play a musical instrument? As you are aging, learning the piano is supposed to be great for brain health.

I have an electronic drum set that I play. I used to play drums in a band and had an acoustic set, but I sold them years ago. Now I can put on a set of headphones, play, and no one is bothered. I also do landscape photography as well

My plan is to do a lot more bass tournament fishing, we have tournaments on a local lake every week. Would like to hone my skills in different techniques then apply them on other Texas lakes like Fork, Sam Rayburn and Toledo Bend.
In recent years I have taken up gardening but have yet to start on vegetables due to previous incidents of pests destroying all of my tomato plants in a single night. Would like to grow peppers but we take several vacations a year and are gone for a week plus at a time.
I bought the ArnieTex Cookbook recently and tried my first homemade adobo sauce that I used to make Carne el Pastor tacos that were out of this world.

Been catching wind of a new hobby making the rounds on the OT, but it’s an acquired taste.

At a certain point in life every man has to make the ultimate decision.
Are you going to get into smoking meat / barbecuing or are you going to get really into history.
Now is the time decide. Good luck
