But looking around at my peers and the guys above me that I'd hope to be in their role 3-5 years down the road, not a single one had any facial hair, so I begrudgingly ditched the facial hair. Bummer.

Unfortunately, if you have a stupid dress code or clean shave policy, you have to enforce it or amend it. If you don't enforce it, it's meaningless. So he can walk in and throw a fit about wanting a beard, but as long as it's policy, he's technically being insubordinate and there's at least an excuse to fire him (not that they would need one in Louisiana since it's an at-will state I think).
So even if good and valuable to the company, he may get canned if for no other reason than to prove that no one is above the company. More than likely they'll amend the policy if he really is invaluable.
On the other hand, is having to shave every morning really that big a deal? I'm asking seriously. Why are there people in here acting like this is some huge travesty? It just doesn't matter to me at all.
The stupid shite at my job like "driving moccasins are inappropriate for work even if they look like penny loafers, but penny loafers are appropriate even if they look like shite" drives me a little nuts because it's disingenuous and the firm I work for prides itself on "culture." But a disingenuous dress code is indicative of a disingenuous culture. Particularly when it is actually made into a massive issue. So it's deeper than "I want to wear driving moccasins" or in the other's case "I want to wear a beard."

I understand having a professional appearance (job-specific) and all that good stuff. But, this is probably just a power move by the boss to assert control and to do it daily.

I'll be changing jobs soon. The hiring manager has facial hair, so I'm pretty sure I'm not shaving my beard.

I think I look better with a beard, therefore I'd rather have a beard. It's a personal style choice. My beard doesn't mean that I'm less professional and doesn't affect my work in any way. I don't know a single person who thinks neat facial hair is unprofessional.

If you work in a sour gas field or other environment that may require a respirator, HSE should be requiring you to shave certain types of facial hair. Facial hair can prevent your respirator from forming a complete seal. This is one of the things that is looked for in a typically required respirator fit test.

Common in the restaurant and food services industries.
Worked for a restaurant group that had a "No facial hair in the front of the house" policy and a "Beards of any kind in the kitchen must wear a beard net".
No one in the kitchen wanted to wear that thing, so no beards.
