Lived in DC for six years and loved it, but that was straight out of college. COL really is nuts.

I'd take Austin if it's for the long haul.

Those are some pretty awesome and different choices to move to.

D.C. could be a lot of fun and you can think of your own reasons to want to live in the nations capital.

Denver is up and coming and if you can weather the cold months, you could love it there. Lots of awesome outdoor stuff to do in close proximity.

Austin is booming. Lots of growth, but it's causing some traffic problems, so choose wisely where to live. Lots of great food, music, night life, and outdoor activities as well. The summers are pretty brutal, but it shouldn't be a huge deal for you, living in New Orleans. It just doesn't rain much in Austin.

Good luck!

Worked in DC, lived in Laurel, MD.

Friday evening commute was 2+ hours and I only lived 20 miles total distance from office to work. If you decide on DC, I highly recommend planning your place to live around a nearby metro station.

DC is fun for the first year as you explore everything but then

I'd be all about Denver but Austin has plenty of potential as well

Denver would be my choice. Austin is a great place to visit but gets old after while. DC is horrible from cost of living, commuting and people in general.

DC would be the most expensive. Had a good time there.

Colorado is probably my favorite state with no coast.

Never been to Austin so can't speak on there.

Your wife must have lived outside of the beltway in one of the shitty burbs i.e. Chantilly in Va. or Gaithersburg in MD. DC is amazing.

Denver - You'll just wish you were in Salt Lake, also too many poors. But it is close to Rockies and awesome stuff in West CO.

Austin - I know it's nice, but your in mid-Texas

DC - East coast life is very romanticized in my mind. I'd love to be less than 3 hours from the major metros on that coast. 3 real seasons, center of politics. Close to center of capitalism. Close to Appalachians, Chesapeake Bay area is awesome. I'd chose DC.

Demographics:

DC is a ghetto hole. Don't move there.

Denver is:
White 68.9%
Black or African American 10.2%
Asian or Asian American 3.4%
Hispanic or Latino (of any race) 31.8%

Austin is:
White 68.3%
Black or African American 8.1%
Hispanic or Latino (of any race) 35.1%
Asian 6.3%

So basically the same, but one is more black and the other more hispanic and asian. Take your pick of which you like best.

Denver metro is larger, so there's more to do and it is close some really seriously awesome outdoor activities, but it snows.

Central Austin (real Austin, not RR, CP, P-ville or other burbs) has basically no crime. And it doesn't snow. However, everything revolves around the Longhorns and the outdoor opportunities are over-rated.

So -

If you really hate snow: Austin.
If you are a huge outdoorsman: Denver
If you are really afraid of crime: Austin
If you want a big city feel with pro sports: Denver

The answer is completely dependent on the type of person you are and what interests you have.

Yep. Best review here. DC has all the NYC restaurants. CityCenter DC is awesome. And it's really close to NYC but not New York.

I live in the Denver area. If you any specific questions on anything, I'd be glad to answer. Fyi, I'm 32, big into live music and the outdoors, and I party. Ask away.

This accounts for 114.3% of the population?

I'm surprised Denver has only 3.6% Asians. I've seen more Asian girls here than anywhere I've been. Though I did spend the last 30 years in the south.

Some people claim both white and Hispanic. It's allowed.
